How did you decide on a goal?

Be it weight or something else ( fitness goal, or pant size etc), how did you choose it?

I don't need help on choosing goals, I have many fitness related goals. I am just curious how others choose them and have they changed as you went along?

For me, it is and has been about getting down to healthy body fat percentage and getting my blood pressure back to normal. Everything else (like working towards a half marathon now) follows from that.

I haven't. I figure I will know when I get there. Having a number in mind lends itself to knowing how long it will take to get there and I feel I am better off not knowing. Besides I will want to continue to take days off and by not having a target goal or date I am not delaying anything I am just living life. I am in no hurry because it doesn't do any good to be in a hurry.

Back in the mid-1990s, I cycled but knew about cycling a century (100 miles in one ride). So that was a goal. I completed it and did a few more when someone suggested I get into racing. That sounded good, so I did for 3 years. That was another goal. I got bored with most of that, and had heard about randonneuring ... so I got into that. Randonneuring gave me lots of long distance cycling goals.

I'm not particularly good at cycling up hills, so when I found out about the 7 Peaks cycling challenge in Victoria, I chatted to my husband and we decided to take it on and completed all 7 climbs. When we moved to Tasmania, Mount Wellington is the mountain to climb. It took a while for me to build up to it, but I've done it twice now.

In Nov 2017, at the age of 50, I started running because it seemed kind of interesting. I found out about an event in mid-January ... so I signed up for the 10K. This year I did the half marathon.

It just goes like that. I see something that looks interesting and figure I'll have a go!

I tend to set my goals a bit on the conservative side, and then once I reach them, I cna evaluate if a new goal is warranted. I think setting aggressive goals that a person may not be able to reach is counter productive.

For weight loss I've just picked a random number within a healthy bmi and plan on adjusting that goal with how I feel/look in the mirror. I've already adjusted my goal down 5 lbs and I am thinking of lowering it another 5.

For fitness it's about what I want my body to be able to do, currently I want it to be able to run 5km and progressively lift heavier things, I'd really like to be able to squat my own body weight.

I've always been skinny and I hated it. So I decided to do something about it.

I set my goal to a weight I have been in the past and felt happy with. Fitness wise I am only 3 months into weight training and just aiming to get stronger and hopefully develop muscle once I transition into maintenance.

I picked a mid-range on the BMI scale for my weight. I don't really care about pants size, or how I look--I just want to be healthy.

I focus most on aesthetics since I am already in a healthy weight range. My small goals do change but the final goal is usually the same.

For my weight I looked at the BMI range for my height and I'm aiming just above it because I am quite muscular (strength training/rowing/swimming) and have wide set hips/shoulders.

I generally set myself some other non-scale goals throughout the month be they fitness, wellbeing or nutrition goals. I normally choose these based on areas I know I can improve on, some months it might be to improve the amount of sleep I'm getting, trying to increase my Protein intake or it might be increasing my mileage for running or incorporate more strength training for a fitness goal.
