Binge Eating

Anyone have any tips for binge eating? I eat really, really well all day and then some nights once my son goes down to bed I go looking for snacks. And I can’t stop at one. Help!!

    Depends on the cause. True binge eating could be part of an eating disorder and best addressed with some professional help.

    What do you mean by "done very well all day"? some people when they go on a diet will eat only food they feel is "diet friendly" and "clean" AND under eat greatly. This leads to over eating at the end of the day or every few days. So my first question is - are you under eating all day and cutting out foods that you enjoy altogether leaving you feeling particularly hungry and wanting "real food" at the end of the day?

    I also plan for a snack before bed, to help eating too much. It's pre-logged to fit in my day. I prfer something carby at night. I used to have a 100calorie back of cheetos but now eat a small bowl of greek yogurt with a bit of protein cereal in it. I alos drink a lot of tea between dinner and bed.

    I push all my meals back because i know i prefer to eat at night. And that is okay. Plan to eat at night if you wish to eat at night. The key is the planning. You are not out of control (Hopefully) And if you are, Take that control back and plan for it. It helps free your mind of the out of control mindset. Nothing wrong with eating at night. I generally eat pretty much every few hours from 5pm-1am

    But yes if it is true binging (which it honestly doesnt sound like since its only at night, You just like to snack late night?) Talk to your doctor. And i Echo what others have said make sure you are eating enough in your day, Whether that be through the day or your planned night snacking. My appetite just goes up at night maybe your similar. Maybe its habit. Take your power back and accept what you enjoy id say. Just plan for it.

    I tend to eat my last big meal of the day quite late, around 9pm, but I can absolutely relate to this scenario. For me, it tends to be boredom that causes me to binge. Or it might be that I try a little snack, because one snack won't hurt, but when that triggers the pleasure receptors in the brain I end up bingeing. Once I get to that stage I think, well I may as well go all out because today's calories are completely blown anyway. I've seen me easily get to 6000 calories doing that. My own way of dealing with that is to get straight back on track next day and try not to beat myself up about it. Total calories for the week is a better indicator of being in a deficit/surplus than simply overeating one day of the week...as long as it is only one day. Have a look at your deficit. Has it been too much for too long and your body is now craving calories? Is it worthwhile bringing calories back up by 10% for a couple of weeks to stabilise your hormonal balance? Do you get enough sleep? What other stresses do you have in your life? All these factors can lead to excessive hunger and cravings. What sort of external accountability do you have in place? If it's just you it's easy to fall off track. If you're accountable to a nutritional coach it's more difficult to do that.

    I hope you get it sorted, or at least figure out what it is and perhaps simply accept the situation.

    I have serious binge eating. I’ve decided to finally address it. I’m on qsymia which has helped but it’s wreaking havoc on my GI system. I’m seeing a mental health DR next month. I’ve snacked here and there but I have not binged in a couple weeks. So yay.

    I have stopped buying all junk I don’t keep it in the house. I feel like I deprive my kids a little because their Mom has no self control I just buy them stuff I don’t eat. Still they are well nourished and fed.

    At night I take a bath and go to bed.

    I drink a diet soda too when cravings set in

    Dont keep any snacks and there wont be anything to find.

    You mentioned seeking professional help. I think I’m at that point as my sugar binges are out of control. Any tips on what to look for to find someone to help with that?

    @Gen216 National Eating Disorders Association (US) has a helpline and a chat you can contact. In the UK, I think the program is called Beat Eating Disorders. Depending on where you’re located, either would be helpful in pointing you towards trusted professionals in your area.

    Assuming you don’t have an eating disorder, and that you are getting enough nutrients during the day, it could just be a bad habit. Kids in bed, you sit on couch to read or watch TV, and it doesn’t feel complete without munching on something. Tea with honey would be a good substitute. Also, drinking alcohol will lower inhibitions, and all of a sudden, “drunk brain” is saying “ screw it, I want a snack”.
