Keto Test Strips and why they are important to me

Hey everyone!
I'm the kind of guy that needs evidence of success in order to keep going. I'm on my fourth day of Keto as of this morning. On a whim, I decided to buy a 50 count box of Keto test strips from Wal-Mart. I did the test, and saw that I am at a moderate level of ketosis, and it made me feel SO good knowing that my efforts are paying off. Just standing here typing this with the thought that I am currently running on FAT instead of CARBS makes me overjoyed.
I know it's a small victory, but I feel like things like these (test strips, the SCALE, etc) makes the lifestyle change a little easier to commit to. Can't wait till I'm in heavy ketosis. I can't wait to share my pictures when I get to my goal weight!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the urine test strips are in the same league as a home pregnancy test - they can tell you if you are producing ketones, but they cannot tell you whether you are in 'deep' ketosis or not. The issue with the strips is that your urine gets concentrated if you are even slightly dehydrated (thus concentrating the ketones as well and causing a darker reading on the strip) and if you are well hydrated your urine gets diluted (thus diluting the ketones and causing a lighter reading on the strip). Basically, as long as there is color on the strips, your body is producing ketones, but the darkness of the color is really meaningless.
The other issue with the strips is that the longer you are in ketosis, the more of the ketones your body will utilize. So the longer your are in ketosis the fewer ketones your body will discard, which will also cause a lighter reading on the strips.
But all other things aside, congrats on your progress and keep up the good work!6 -

Thanks! If anything, this comment will make any future “bad” readings not mean as much, thus not piss me off hahah

That’s a great start. I saw the fist few pounds come off very quickly. Been on it since 4/15/19 and have lost 14 pounds. Stick with it, it works!1
