Hi,

can anyone tel me if cycling TWICE the distance which you would jog (in the same time) is a good rule of thumb. I Jog around 20 minutes covering around 3k but when im on the exercise bike i can cover twice this distance without the same difficulty. i'v played about with the resitance settings to try and make them equal but it still feels alot easier. I assume becuase my body weight is not incorperated because im sitting on a seat??

Cheers
J

you use different muscles when you run compared to when you bike. I can run 2km but I can barely bike half a km, it depends who you are. Maybe get an app that tracks how many calories you are burning if you are worried about it but I wouldn't compare running to biking, they are totally different!

Calories in biking depends a lot on where you are riding. Cruising along on flat roads at a steady pace won't consume the calories that climbing a steep hill or riding a mountain bike over rugged terrain.

Also a lighter road bike is a big difference than riding a fat tire bike.

I ride a road bike about 10 miles round trip to the commuter train daily (mostly flat with a little bit of climbing short hills along the route) and also run on the treadmill (Typically 20 minutes of HIIT) at the gym a couple of times a week. I feel I"m burning a lot more on the treadmill on one of those days than I do during those 10 miles of cycling.

I once heard that to get the same fitness gains as running, you need to bike 3x (the distance? time? can't remember, sorry). As a former runner and current cyclist, I usually figure about 3x the mileage.
