DIY "greek yogurt ice cream"

I've googled recipes to try but curious if anyone has tried this and if so, how they do it? Just mix in some cocoa or powdered pb and stick in freezer for a bit? mix with bananas or no need?

I have a yonanas i have used in the past to "blend" frozen fruit into a texture closer to sorbet. I quite liked that but want to experiment with options with more protein and more chocolaty.

Stir in a packet of jello pudding and place into freezer for a bit. Just dont allow it to freeze. You can stir once a while and that way you will have a better textured ice cream.

and i totally eat jello-o cups just about daily already haha. i mix with cool whip so an easy switch.

ETA: oops powdered jello makes more sense. I have some of that in the cupboard too!

I used a bit of jelly powder, lemon zest and some cottage cheese - next time I'll try yoghurt. Delicious!

I do the "nice cream" using the frozen bananas and various fruits with just a little non dairy milk- add topping- defintely not ice cream but does hit the sweet tooth

I have an ice cream maker and I'm thinking of just putting a pack of greek yogurt and some pudding powder in. I think I would say that is three servings. Thanks for the idea!

Greek yogurt, powdered Cheesecake flavored jello PUDDING mix and topped with mixed berries and walnuts is my almost-daily dessert. I make it one-serving-at-a-time and only put it in the freezer for about five minutes.

Sometimes I use vanilla pudding mix, sometimes banana, and then different fruits. It's a really satisfying dessert.

With banana flavored pudding and Greek yogurt I'll add a splash of chocolate syrup after taking it out of the freezer, add nuts and strawberries and cherries and maybe pineapple and it's pretty much a Banana Split.

I don't freeze mine but I make chocolate pudding all the time. 1 cup 2% Fage plain greek yogurt with 2 tablespoons of chocolate Ovaltine.

I probably am doing no one any favors by suggesting that Oreo pudding powder mixed into Vanilla regular yogurt is more than addictive. With strawberries for me, please.

I have the recipe down to 200 calories on all those, so:
    • 50g 2% Fage Greek yogurt
    • 50g lowfat regular vanilla yogurt
    • on all the recipes other than the Oreo one, I use 9-12g powdered pudding mix per serving
(Oreo, I use the full 25g of pudding mix)
    • Fruit, from 50g-120g depending on the sweetness of the chosen fruit
    • Nuts, 5g

    I use frozen fruit.

I mix the yogurt and the pudding powder
Put that in the freezer while I prep/cut the fruit which is frozen already, needs to thaw a little
I just dump the chopped nuts on top of the pudding, then add the fruit on top that.

With the pumpkin I'll mix the pumpkin in with the yogurt and pudding and freeze the thing for 10-15 minutes, then top with a dollop of regular vanilla yogurt and nuts. Seems like pumpkin cheesecake that way.

If you don't struggle with moderation, adding a crumbled cookie or some granola is good at the end before serving.

You just have to play around with textures.

I don't really like it frozen hard, but you might. I don't even like hard ice cream - I let it sit till it's softer, so pudding/Greek yogurt in the freezer for 5-10 minutes is really close to that.

Tried just greek yogurt with unsweetened cocoa and powdered PB and eww that's going in the trash. or maybe i'll see if i can stir in some little sweetener if that helps?

    will continue my testing.

I need a sugar free fat free version of the oreo pudding powder and then I'm soooooooooooooooooo in. (Also 0% greek yogurt :p)

You can also do any frozen Greek yogurt combo with your yonanas machine. Make whatever your mixture is, then put it into ice cube trays. (Then pop softened but frozen cubes in the machine.) Your mixture needs a sweetener for sure because the cocoa powder won’t cut it on its’ own, but I think you realized that already.

I would blend it in a nutribullet or blender first (instead of mixing with a spoon) so it’s smoother and not as grainy with all the powders.

I use my nicecream as a meal because its basically a fancy parfait with solid macros lol. 300 calories (100 in grahm cracker alone but so worth it to me lol)- And yes i have made this with stevia and cocoa as well its very good. I go 175g (1 serving) plain greek yogurt - freeze it. 150g frozen banana and a serving of grahm crackers. In my food processor i blend the yogurt up (thaw edges slightly in the container under running warm water helps it blend right up with less chunks and effort) Blend the crap out of the yogurt add a lil water (tiny amount) if it helps make it less ice chunky, Then blend in the bananas stirring off the sides of the food processor until blended up-i like to leave some banana chunks. And then i just top with lots of grahm crackers cause yum. Generally comes out perfect texture but can freeze for a while aslong as you stir it every 20 or so.

maybe i will salvage my mess by blending with a sweetener. i had hoped to avoid adding sugar but that's a big no :P

i have some frozen fruit and banana slices maybe even just adding banana will be enough (in blender), could be a first quick test (banana PB and Choco sounds good to me) then if not sweet enough add actual sugar in some form

I have a question about this. I tried it the other day and the yogurt got really thick and kinda gross. Is it supposed to get thick when you put in the cheesecake pudding mix?

It seems like a recipe for frozen yogurt is what you're looking for. A quick google for "frozen yogurt recipe" (without the quotes) shows, among other recipes, one from The Kitchn and from Serious Eats. There are also plenty that don't require the use of an ice cream maker.

Thanks :) I've created a list of recipes to try during the last few days.

i went off script on this one and it failed haha. Looking to avoid adding any extra calories but if it's unedible then that's useful.

It's really not that complicated, but you are going to want to add sugar, primarily because of the texture. Sugar (or alcohol) will help it from not becoming a frozen block of milky tangy ice. Assuming you have an ice cream machine, I would start with the recipe from Serious Eats and go from there.

If you don't have an ice cream this one from Gluten Free on a Shoestring looks good and has the least amount of calories (second to the one from SE) and but I suspect this one would be better texture wise. I would use that freezing method for the one for SE if you didn't have an ice cream machine.

I spent three summers in my late teens/early 20s trying to get really good at/experiment with making a specific type of food. One year it was cupcakes (easy but so many different types!), another year it was macarons (hard), and one year it was ice cream and sorbet.

no ice cream machine and looking at low cal “nice creams”. not too picky on texture i even eat oat based non dairy “ice cream”

low fat yogurt was to add protein like the “eat the pint” ice creams. and cuz many others call for bananas which i find just taste of banana

In that case, I would go with the one from Gluten Free on a Shoestring and go from there. It's essentially greek yogurt with a few tbsp of honey that is frozen and then then blended in a food processor.
