So...I have been unsick for probably a total of like 2 weeks this school year. Im a teacher, and I think it's probably just my kids bringing me germs, but seriously.....I'm SOOO SICK of being sick!! Whenever, I'm not sick, i do really good exercising and keeping active, but the colds and everything throw me off track about once a month. Any suggestions? I'm already taking 800% vitamin C to try to help prevent getting sick...and I eat healthy, and wash my hands alot....just can't seem to not get sick.

Kristin!!! You're telling my story! Sorry to hear about your persistent sickness!

I have been sick since early March, and have on and off had a sore throat, head ache and sinus issues! I've never eaten as well, or exercised as hard as I am now, so what gives? It is really getting frustrating! (I am a stay at home mom - but was a teacher - and NEVER had sickness like this!).

Do you think that we are taxing our bodies with the low low calories? Just a thought...

Any chance it could be allergies? If you have health coverage, get tested - you may not always have health coverage, you know?

My story - I live in the most allergenic city in the US for year round allergies. We have something to be allergic to every since month. I was convinced I was allergic to molds - they are almost always high here. So I went and got tested. I'm allergic to my cats  Yep, the crazy animal rights activist who volunteers at a shelter, is allergic to cats. Oddly, it was only one of three things I was allergic to (the others were feathers and one weed). I did the shots for 5 years. I still get some reaction, but feel much better.

Mary - I DO have allergies - do you think that is the culprit? I've never been this bad before, but I guess it is possible. My son is an asthma, allergy, and eczema sufferer, so our house is free of common allergens. I'm at a loss.

Is there anything you take? I see an ND along side my MD, and the ND prescribes immune boosting, whereas the MD suggets the antihistamimes, etc. I'm so confused as to what to do!

Oh my goodness. I've been going through the exact same thing. It has been non-stop for me since December. I got the flu, stomach flu, bronchitis and now I have the stomach flu again  !!!
    It is so frustrating!
I keep telling me myself that next year will be better cuz I've convinced myself that my body is detoxing itself with all the healthy stuff I'm eating. I know it probably isn't true but right now, it's the only thing getting me through being sick all the time. If they were just colds, I could handle it but everything I've gotten has taken me right out for days and it takes me a long time to get my energy back!!!

Lets try to stay strong girl cuz before we know it, summer will be here and we will bask in the sun!

    Take care!
  • Just wondering but do you guys take anti-biotics?

I sometimes will use an antihistamine spray, but that's it. Since it stays in your nose, for the most part, the side-effects are minimal. If you know what your allergies are, it is easier to treat symptoms. I don't think your MD or your ND would have a problem with allergy shots - they are basically immunity boosting.

Oh, and my husband uses the saline sprays and finds them helpful.

I have taken antibiotics 3 times in 2008 alone for the sinus infection, bronchitis and strep throat. Do you think that's part of it?

Yeah, antibiotics are not selective and take out all Bacteria, (excluding 'super bugs'), they take out the bacteria thats making you ill and also the bacteria essensial to our health. I personaly avoid antibiotics and have managed to for the last 10 years.

Also sterile environments contribute to allergies. The immune system, developed in our cave man days, is geared up for all kinds of attacks yet in a sterile environment it has nothing to do and attackes other things instead, like pollen etc, resulting in a reaction, hayfever.

My mom was taking antibiotics for her sinus infection, and had stomach problems for a long time! The doctor even told her that the antibiotics probably messed with her balanced system. It took her weeks before she was back to normal.

Sorry to hear about your health-

Not sure if you are willing to try some holistic remedies but ...if you want to try some...

    1. Green tea everyday- at least 2-3 glasses (no caffeine so it can count as your water too) Also do loose tea from an organic/health store if possible.
    2. Black Walnut Oil- a few drop of extract into water (health food store) and one TSP each day will help to keep your blood clean of parasites

Eat healthy for at least one month if not longer- no preservatives, no frozen foods, no pre-made dishes, fresh (organic if possible) fruits and vegies, no meat after 2 pm, orangic or homemade soup with lots of vegies, noodles and little chicken. Avoid sugars and white flour items- this feeds bateria and parasties. Fresh Beets & radishes (2TPSP- grated) on your salad daily will also help get rid of parasites.

Get the right amount of sleep each night- 6-8 hours (use Chamomille tea if you need help going to sleep; just before bed)

Probiotics-- are very important! I take 2 pills daily.
And I recently just came off antibiotics, so i've stepped it up a little more.
also opt for yogurt to further assist in good digestive flora of the GI tract.

There are many naturopaths/herbalists who absolutely believe/practice that many illnesses are in direct relation to the gut. If we are out of balance there, then it will weaken our immune systems and make us more susceptible to getting ill.

stay clear of red meat too-- bad bacteria thrives on it.
it takes longer to break down in the intestine... so i'd avoid it all together!

Do you have a wholefoods store near you? Very easy to find this there--but if not, Even walgreens and CVS carry products that would be suitable. A really good probiotic is usually refridgerated (and should remain so).. I haven't seen any like that at drug stores, but wholefoods..yes.check for a local health store near you.

Also, are you getting enough sleep? The average person needs 6.5-8 hours per day (depends on your body, some people don't need 8 hours)... you'd be amazed at how much getting the right amount of sleep will help your immune system.

One of the best things you can do for your body is find time in the day to reach deep relaxation. I know some people aren't into meditation, but relaxation techniques are just as productive. It also will help you sleep better. Tai Chi is also good for body strength (it looks easy, but let me tell you, like yoga, you WILL sweat, if you're doing it long enough--because it's slow controlled movements)

Green tea is also a good suggestion, for cleansing the body.

And check for mold in your house. Mold can do some seriously weird things to your body.
Make you very tired/fatigued. Mentally spaced. and gain weight (this is due to an adrenaline response!--which slow walking for 1 hour, twice per day, can help overcome)

hope you find the right options for you.
    feel better!!!!! :)

Thanks for all the ideas... I do most of that stuff already (everything except the Black Walnut oil), and no antibiotics for me!

My Naturopathic Doc would not have it! She cycles my on and off a probiotic (the real live refridgerated stuff) every two months, so that my gut should have a good balance of "flora" (so much nicer than, "bacteria").

It could be alleriges for sure, but the fever is a bit of a mystery. Oh well. I've got to just get well and try and stay that way!

Ahh a hazard of the job. I can so relate! Can't these people stay home? Or keep their sick little one's home? No they can't lol. In the mean time get your anti bacterial gel and your hanky.

I went through this when my kids were small, and I didn't work...I remained sick for an entire school year...everything the kids brought home from school, I caught and usually had it worse then they did...long story short...the culprit was actually my toothbrush!!!! Throw them away especially if you have been sick..they are a breeding ground for bacteria....it helped me...maybe it will help one of you, if you haven't already tried it....:ohwell: just a thought:flowerforyou:

Many people will bad allergies run fevers. Sorry you're still ill.
  • Anyone tried kombucha?

It's the ultimate probiotic. It's a bit hard core tho.

It's a type of mushroom that you float on top of some green tea and sugar. You keep it warm for a week then drain off all the liquid, and refil the bowl with tea and sugar. The drain off liquid should then be kept in the fridge and drank over the week, a glass a day. Repeat.

It tastes a bit like sweet and sour, but it was a bit too much for me and evenyually i stopped doing it. It's not the most pleasant of drinks lol

    http://www.shapeup.org/atmstd/sud10v3/sud10s7.php

I was reading that this morning.
it attributes low immunity to being partially due to not eating enough calories for your RMR.

hey, every little bit of info helps ;)

kambucha! YICK! *lol* one of my best friends takes that daily.
i've read the plus and positives of it.
not daring enough to go there though...

It seems it's not advised to brew it in ceramic ware (note, my friend uses a gigantic glass jar)
and you could be allergic to it (mold?)

    http://www.cancer.org/docroot/ETO/content/ETO_5_3X_Kombucha_Tea.asp?sitearea=ETO

just some more info i found :)
