We are traveling and stopping at fast food simply because it’s expedient. Rural ND and MN, stops along the freeway are few.
I hate these new computer monitor style menu boards! They don’t show the entire menu. I couldn’t find a better choice, placed my order, and after I’d stood there a minute, a salad menu popped up - and then disappeared almost instantly.
That’s the second time it’s happened. Yesterday at McDonald’s and today at Burger King. Doggone it, from now on, I’m holding up the line til someone explains all the choices to me.
Sorry just had get get several hundred calories worth of venting off my chest.

Use your phone to get the menu online before you approach the drive up ordering speaker. Preferably before you get in line. Gas stations here (MN) have pretty good selection for fast food too.1

If it is any consolation I consider salads from places like that too much of a wildcard on calories anyway. I certainly do not trust posted information because the salads they test will likely be carefully controlled whereas the salads in the actual stores may have twice as much cheese, meat, etc. I think the sandwiches or burgers are probably going to be closer to their estimate assuming you don't get one with a mountain of mayo or mayo based sauce on it.3

Years ago when I worked at McDonald's everything was strictly counted 2 pickles for this sandwich and 3 for that 7 or 8 slivered onions and the sauces were in dispenser guns that shot a set amount. Fries may vary by how many they stuff in there but the sandwiches tend to be about the same. We had basic garden or chicken salads when i worked there one got 4 tomato wedges and the other a half cup scoop of chicken. Lettuce we just kinda put whatever would fit in the container. Amounts were watched pretty strictly by our managers so as to not loose money. We even got written up if we got caught not charging for extras like cheese or dipping sauces. This was not a corporate store but a franchise owner so I don't know if its different in other mcd's but I pretty much trust fast food counts (at least my local lol)2

Look for Culvers (a few in the Dakotas but quite a few in MN). They have great salad options. My personal favorite is the Chicken Cranberry Walnut salad.0
