I am diabetic. I want to lose weight to get that under control. but the amount of sugar set as my "goal" is way more than recommended for a diabetic, and it is more than is recommended for a female. Is there a plan to have diabetic defaults for people like me? If you added the "Are you a diabetic" question to the profile, then it could default to diabetic numbers. THIS WOULD BE SO HELPFUL!!!

No one from MFP moderates this board. You could consider posting this on the MFP Suggestions/Feedback board. That said, you are able to change the macros to meet your personal dietary needs, you don't need to go by the MFP recommendations.4

Just change the macro or ignore it.4

You can custom set your macros.2

You can personalize your macros. You can even choose which ones are closely tracked. Carbs in general is more important than sugar. Your saliva starts the process of converting starches to sugar, so by the time you swallow, your body sees them as the same. On the other hand, fiber is important for sugar control.
That being said, for many overweight diabetics, loosing weight is more important than the actual number of carbs consumed. You need a diet you can be consistent with.
If you need ideas, "good carbs, good fats" diets like South Beach or the Mediterranean diet have the highest stick to it rates, as well as proven results for diabetes and general metabolic syndrome.
Being in the middle of reintroduction phase, I can also recommend an elimination diet, if you can stick with it. After three weeks in the elimination phase, my blood sugar was down to the lowest since I started tracking; even better than when I was on Ozempic for two months. Now that I am systematically reintroducing one food at a time, it should be easy to see if anything causes significant changes in my blood sugar levels. Obviously, this would also depend on your medications, as it could lead to blood sugar lows if you are on insulin.
Finally, don't underestimate the importance of exercise. Skipping a workout seems to have a bigger impact on my next day's fasting numbers than having a reasonable treat. Start where you are and work up to at least half an hour of moderate intensity, including both cardio and strength.12 -
Nice post, concordania.
I was diagnosed 4 months ago, with a 1CA of 50. Since then, I lost 28 pounds and exercised a lot.
My latest 1CA, two weeks ago, was 38. I am no longer diabetic.
Weight loss and exercise are very important. In my opinion, other things, like macro splits are of secondary importance to these factors. Obviously, everyone's response to these factors will vary, but they are very important.6
