When trying to lose weight, (lose weight only) do Macros really matter or is it more about the calories?

Calories.
Macros matter for satiety, and muscle building/preservation.8 -
Calories in, calories out. One guy did the "Twinkie" diet where all he ate were Twinkies for over 2 months. Literally just Twinkies. He lost significant weight.
Granted, that is NOT recommended. Weight loss that causes severe nutritional deficiencies will bite you in the *kitten* and screw up long-term weight loss. (I would not have wanted to see the Twinkie guy's bloodwork after that diet). But on a base level, it's just about burning more calories than you eat.5 -
agree with above. for weight loss it's calories.
macros matter in the sense they more of one or the other can help keep you full (some feel better eating more protein, or more fat, or more carbs). but everyone is different on that.
You also want ENOUGH protein and fat for health.6 -
It’s tough to maintain a diet without enough protein because you will be hungry. Taking the big picture... making your macros is a key to success because it will help you continue your eating plan for the time it’s going to take.0

Eat delicious food that fuels and nourishes your body to live the life you’ve chosen. Be mindful that your food choices will leave you satisfied yet have a calorie count aligning with your weight loss/gain/maintenance goals and let the macros calculate accordingly.1
