Emotional Overeating

What do you do to overcome the craving to binge and use food for comfort?
Mantras? Rituals? A "buddy" (who are they or where did you meet them)?

I'm not always successful in staving off the comfort food cravings when things get tough emotionally, but what has worked for me is considering how I feel at that moment (awful) and how I would feel after I binge-ate comfort foods and went wayyyy over my calorie limit (significantly worse). I don't like feeling crappy, so why would I want to increase the awfulness?
Sometimes, though, I just eat the comfort food and acknowledge that I'll have to go back to eating within my limits the next day and that I won't lose as much weight that week. Sometimes that's okay8 -
I'm less than a month into my plant based with seafood, eggs and dairy diet. It's amazing to me how my cravings and emotional overeating are just gone.
Before MFP, emotions would lead to pizza and chinese food. No more. My diet has calmed my emotions. I didn't expect this to happen at all, much less so quickly. What a bonus.
I'm now in control of what I put into my body. 😀8 -
I think it would actually be lacto-ovo-pescatarian. https://www.verywellfit.com/pescatarian-diet-4174528
Lynda - not picking on you, just the other poster and I think of something different when we hear "plant based". Glad your new WOE is working well for you!1 -

Regular exercise really helps me manage regular stress, plus more exercise in times of increased stress.
I no longer wake up with anxiety, but when I did I would soothe myself with the Buddhist Loving Kindness Meditation or the Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear.0 -
Because most people don't know what pescatarianism is.
I haven't jumped on any wagon. Any more questions? 😬5 -

Thank you for being kind. I think some people need to learn to be respectful.3 -
It helps not having any of my trigger foods in the house, which is quite a big list. If I have that need to eat, I will make oatmeal or grab fruit or both. They say you should call someone, read a book, do a hobby. One good thing is to come here and say that you feel you are going to binge. Maybe some motivating words could stop the binge. I have been chewing lots of sugar free gum. You could also try having tea, broth. I mean I guess we are still caving into that need/urge to eat by substituting another food but the other food, the healthier type, may be enough to make you feel full or satisfied. And for me, because you aren't having sugar or fat products, your binge feeling may stop after that healthier food. It truly is a struggle. Hugs0

The best way to get rid of a bad habit is to replace it with a better one. Try to think of other quick easy way to calm yourself down or cheer yourself up - take a walk, a YT channel with cat videos, a video game, a play list on your phone - and keep a list or item to remind you nearby.
Get in the habit of logging food before you eat it. If you want some pretzels, weigh out a portion, log it, then eat it. Sometimes seeing the numbers can help re center your thought process.
If there is a specific food you have no control over, keep it out of the house for the time being until you get this under control.
If this tends to happen at night after you've used up your calories, try brushing your teeth - most food tastes nasty after toothpaste1
