Golfing as exercise

As a former runner(*), my only exercise now is our twice daily walks (2 & 2.5 miles) with the dog, and golfing. I get out twice a week for 9 holes, walk, and carry my bag. I also get out every other weekend, sometimes more, for 18 holes, also walking & carrying. I'd have to double check, but that's about a 15-20lb pack that I'm not only carrying for 3 - 6 miles, but taking it off & picking it up many times per round (many times ... I'm a 19.1 HCP!)

Anyone else out there doing anything like this?

(*) Former runner. I used to run a fair amount; did a marathon at age 22, and another at age 42. At age 57, my wife is under strict instructions to hit me if I start talking about doing another marathon. I stopped running because I got obsessive & annoyed with my lack of progress, and just wasn't getting any pleasure from it.

If you are walking and carrying your clubs, you are burning A LOT of calories. Walking an 18 hole coruse is about 5 miles. The calrorie burn for golf is listed under cardio, and it would put you aroung 600-700 for 9 holes and over 1,200 for 18, but you may want to get an HR monitor for a more accurate read. I think the colrie burn numbers on this site are pretty generous.

It is certainly exercise. MFP gives you 1300 credit for a 4 hr round carrying. I am sure like most of there estimates is 10-20% overstated, but also suggest just getting a HRM if it is important for you to know the most accurate answer.

Or just take 1,000 calories and be done with it. How far off can you be?

And you decided golf would help with that?
