I have been overweight for a long time, and when I go to upscale clothing stores, I am all but invisible. Now that I have lost a little weight (13 lbs. so far--woot!), and am dressing a little nicer, the sales people suddenly realize I am there and rush to help me! I am all for losing weight and getting in shape, but I think it's unfortunate that sometimes you have to be thin and pretty to get attention.:grumble:

I havebeen shunned most of my life because of being overweight. All the way from school to now. The only time I was really excepted and got good attention is when my weight was down from the type of job I had. I have always felt that people never wanted to be around me when I was fat I have even heard a small child in a store one time tell his mom that I was fat, never knew them. And of course she shhhh to him. I got a pretty good idea what your saying.
  • I know the feeling. I went shopping for a new outfit for my sister for her birthday some years back. I hate going into "normal" shops cause I know nothing there will fit me , kinda depressing ... anyway... I went to the cash and asked the lady if they had a bigger size of the outfit , it was like a 6 , sis needed an 8. The woman looked right at me and said there is absolutely NOTHING in here that would fit YOU.

So I kindly explained to her it was for my sister , then I kindly explained to her due to rudeness and ignorance she wouldnt have my business nor the business of friends or family or people on the street cause I planned to let everyone know just how ignorant she was pmsl.

No excuse for salespeople to be rude. :explode:

How rude!!! Why couldn't she just have said, "We carry that outfit from size 2 to 12"??? I would cry if someone said this to me!

Anyway, my family has their own way of saying if you are overweight. My cousin was always a slim girl, hit preteens and became a little chubby, then had a couple of inches growth spurt and grew into her body. Now she is very slim again.

When she was in her chubby stage for about a year they all whispered, "Have you SEEN Liz lately?" I heard them all in the corner and was so annoyed. Later after her growth spurt they told her a million times, "Liz, you look so NICE!" I understand why they were talking like this, but it's enough to give a 12-14 year old girl a complex! Every child goes through a chubby, gangly, or just not-attractive stage. Give them a break! I hope I don't constantly focus on my daughter's looks, just encourage her to be active and healthy if I think she needs to lose a little weight, without pointing it out.

I don't remember strangers being rude to my or my mother (both overweight), but my family goes way over the top either commenting on weight gain or loss at family functions. Both are annoying. Grrrrr....

If someone said that to me, I'd be wondering how well my foot would fit her a*s!! People can be so condescending sometimes.

I went shopping at The Forum Shops a few months ago and wanted this awesome Versace bright yellow purse to match my Versace shoes.

At the time, my friend was in another store and holding my Valentino purse. They ignored me in Versace until my friend came in with my purse. When she handed me my purse, the store personnel then realized that I wasn't just browsing and decided to help me get my bag.

    I feel your pain.

Congrats on your weight loss. Sometimes sales staff thinks you don't want them to know your size or they don't want you to FEEL uncomfortable so they stand of and let obese people or overweight people shop in private. Just playing devil's advocate. I know it is assuming. But a lot of people who have body issues do want to shop without help. So maybe they saw you but ASSumed you didn't want to be seen. Dumb, but instead of just offering and then allowing you to decline they just avoided the "elephat in the room" no pun intended:laugh:
