The ultimate betrayal: Food Poisoning

It was my weekly free meal out with the hubby. Our favorite Latin restaurant for over 20 years.
Tacos (most likely fresh onion and cilantro or salsa) how could you betray us this way??!!!!
I'm on day 3 of my stomach churning. The worst of it is over thank goodness.
What can I do/eat to get back to being my regular energized self? Any meal or drink suggestions? I hear probiotics from fermented foods can get gut health back regular.

I just pop Immodium and then eat really bland food for a couple days and it is usually fine.
The last time I went to my favorite Mom & Pop Mexican place I had the same thing happen.2 -
Not me, but my husband. We were thruhiking the Continental Divide Trail from Canada to Mexico and about 3/4 of the way through, which meant we were constantly starving and my husband had lost about 50 pounds. We were in a town in NM that had a Pizza Hut buffet. We ate and ate and ate, and drank a lot too. The next morning, while roadwalking back to a Trail Angel's home (a couple that took us in for a couple of nights) DH got sick. He spent the next two days throwing up. It was so bad he couldn't even hold on to water. Fortunately, the good people let us stay until he could hike again. It turned out later we learned of 5 other hikers who got sick at the same place. Not all were lucky enough to have a soft bed to recover in.3

Eat whatever your stomach can handle. Eating at maintenance is always a good idea when you're sick. Stay hydrated, preferably with an electrolyte drink like Gatorade.
There isn't conclusive scientific evidence to support most claims people make about probiotics (https://www.nhs.uk/news/food-and-diet/no-evidence-probiotics-promote-gut-diversity-in-healthy-adults/). The most recent study showed that they don't help children who have the stomach flu: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1802598?query=recirc_curatedRelated_article. If you want fermented foods and they don't upset your stomach, then eat them, but they may or may not do anything special for your digestive system.0 -
I had this last week. Once the diarrhea is gone, take a Kaopectate to help with the gut cramping. You want your body to get rid of what's toxic, so don't take before.
I started back with eggs, toast, pasta without tomato sauce.
You can take kefir or a good probiotic to help restore your gut.
Feel better.1 -
Ginger for nausea and pain. You can actually just cut a slice of fresh ginger and put it in a cup of tea, doesn't hurt the taste of the tea but soothes the stomach.
Drink broth/soup. It's inoffensive to your gut and full of the vitamins and stuff you need to feel better. There's a reason soup is people's go-to sickness food.
About two years ago, I had a tasty chicken linguine alfredo at this restaurant near home. An hour later I was in pain. A day later I was in hospital on morphine for pain. I didn't eat a thing for two weeks, it hurt so bad. The first thing I ate that didn't hurt was a cup of soup from a coffee place and I almost cried with relief. It was the best soup I ever had.3 -

I'm in the process of getting a diagnosis for what I thought was a stomach bug.
I highly recommend Boost as an easily digestible way to get nutrients. This was approved by my doctor but of course, talk to yours.
I find that the BRAT diet doesn't work for me - can't do bread, applesauce or bananas because they all upset my stomach. I've found white rice in small portions works. Pedialyte pops have been a godsend, as have plain rice chex for more textural variety to my diet.3 -
Whenever I get any kind of food poisoning, I take or consume Ginger... Capsules, juice, tea, or raw ginger, whatever form is easiest or cheapest. Then I wait 30 minutes and follow with a good probiotic. It helps almost instantly.
I don't know where you live, but Whole Foods sells a drink called Ginger Soother for this; it's sold in their supplement section, not with their regular fruit juices.3 -
I'm feeling better today. Thank you for the advise and stories6
