When my brain tells me I can’t!

"Getting to the gym" is NOT the hardest part of a workout for me. The hardest part is not giving in to that brain chatter that is fueled by fear and shame. Thankfully, I manage to win most of the time. This is how it goes:
My brain: "Why are you even here? Are you pretending you are fit?"
Me: Not pretending. Just trying to be. Keep going, body.
My brain: "Who are you kidding? You don’t belong here!"
Me: I don’t belong on a hospital bed either. Keep going, body.
My brain: "People know you are a slob."
Me: I hope people have better things to think about than that. Keep going, body.
My brain: "Really? You think you will be as fit as her one day?"
Me: I don’t know. All I want right now is to feel healthy. Keep going, body.
My brain: "You know jumping makes you look even more ridiculous than you are. Just give up!"
Me: 'Not trying anything' would look even more ridiculous. Keep going, body.
My brain: "It has only been 15 minutes and you are so tired! This was a mistake. Go home now!"
Me: My body will get used to it. Keep going, body.
My brain: "Wait...slow down... You can't run that fast!"
Me: I can try. Keep going body.
My brain: "What? Keep going?Just stop. No one cares."
Me: I care. Keep going, body.
My brain: "You are half way there! You can do this!"
Me: Keep going, body.
My brain: "It doesn’t feel as bad as I thought. I like this!"
Me: Enjoy the endorphins, brain! Keep going, body.
My brain: "We only have 5 minutes to go! I feel so accomplished!"
Me: Glad you finally joined in, brain! Thank you, body!
I knew we could do it!

Keep it up! Before you know it, your internal dialogue will change and this is all you'll hear1 -
Yep, just keep moving.
My brain tells me most mornings 'I just don't think we should run today' ....most mornings it's wrong, but it takes a while for it to give in.....1 -
And then I tell my brain to f*** off and do it anyway. It takes time to build habit and takes a minute to break it. You can do it. Stay Strong 💪

This might be dumb—but every time I get to that rough spot in a workout where I’m dying to stop or feel ridiculous, I close my eyes and vision myself at a proud moment in my life...it gives me the instant confidence boost I need to keep it up (and I find myself pulling my form back together Bc I’m standing taller.) I also love a few moments of power stancing before leaving for the gym—it gets me pumped and feeling confident.2

Way to go at hanging in there despite those voices! Never forget how good it feels when you're done and leaving the gym! I was so intimidated to go back to the gym but am so glad I forced myself to face it and work through those feelings.1
