I was hospitalized with acute pancreatitis 8 years ago. It happened out of the blue one night after dinner. Horrible stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and the "runs". Rushed to the ER with a very elevated lipase enzyme. I was kept on IV fluids without food or water for 3 days, and with pain and anti-emetic drugs. Almost taken to the ICU.

Lipase went down quickly, and labs and CT scan showed that the liver and the gall bladder were not affected. The doctor told me that I probably "passed" a small gallbladder stone or that it was a virus that had affected the pancreas. Nobody could give me a definite reason for the attack.

I was followed for 6 months with periodic blood tests and a couple of scans. All the results were normal and I was cleared, but my stomach turned very sensitive to certain foods and to alcohol. I have to be very careful with very fatty foods, very sweets desserts, chocolate, spicy food, beef, and I only sip some wine once in a while.

I only had 12 bs to lose when I joined MFP and I took my sweet time to reach my goal; I can't blame pancreatitis to the diet because I have always been a healthy eater with no alcohol problem, As in your case, the pancreatitis was a very unpleasant surprise.

Just take it easy with food, eat light and be aware of what affects you the most. Don't hesitate to go back to the doctor and ask for more tests if you don't feel well. Wait to exercise until you feel better and have more energy. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your story! I go to the GI specialist on the 22nd in hopes to get answers the ER could not provide! Fingers crossed!
