Is this normal or has anyone experienced this ? I did leg day yesterday , I don’t know if it came from doing squats or deadlifts . But today I noticed when I applied pressure / or pressed down on that area that’s circled it hurt . And that’s on both hands , it doesn’t hurt any where else but their and it only hurt when pressure is applied .
I did go up in weight deadlifting and squats yesterday. Before that never had a problem with my hand hurting

This guy goes to the doctor and says "it hurts when I do this" and the doctor says "then don't do that!"
I haven't had the hand issue you're talking about, but I've had other similar problems occasionally. I'm guessing it's from the DLs not squats because of the way you home the bar differently, but I'm kind of an idiot and not to be trusted.
What I would do in your shoes is give your hand enough time to stop bothering you. No deads or squats until next week, use machines like the leg sled etc. When your hand is back to normal, go to the gym and do your normal DLs, and nothing else. If your hand doesn't bother you for two days, go try squats and nothing else, see how you respond. Once you figure out what did it, you can start to address the issue.
Good luck! 🙂1 -
I have similar pain in the same area, gets worse when pushing something like a barbell, deadlifts aggravate it some, not so much with squats. Mine is mostly caused by arthritis1

I get that quite a bit, but not to the point that I can't stand the pain. It's more like a DOMS sort of feeling. I mostly get it after I've been doing incline press ups on the Smith machine. Wearing gloves helps.1

Forget to mention I was doing squats without a squat rack . So I would have to raise the bar over my head . It was fine til I added more weight . I don’t know if that was the cause of it .
It is kinda puffy / swollen in that area too.0 -
did you knock it or hit anything with it?0

No , I mean it wasn’t hurting before that and it’s both hands . I was squatting without a rack though , raising it over my head and I went up in weight . I could lift that amount of weight, but it was hard to keep raising it over my head . I don’t know if that did it , maybe I shouldn’t have went up in weight

Does it go away eventually or do you ice it or anything ?
Mines is a little puffy .
And yea it’s not to that point either , I mean I can still use my hands . That could be it , the DOMS , but I never had pain or soreness in my hand to compare it . And I was wearing gloves , I don’t know if they are the best ones to have . Do you think lifting without a squat rack , raising heavy weight over your head can cause that ? I mean I’ve been doing that, with no problem , but I added more weight this time .0 -

lol I can relate .
I haven’t had that issue before either , or any hand issue . What do you usually do for yours that’s similar ? Do you ice it or apply heat ?
It could be, I looked at my hand positions today to see how I gripped the bar . But when I deadlift it never touches that area . I was squatting without a squat rack , so I was raising it over my head and I went up in weight with it . Before I had no problem with it . But tested it out and noticed when I do raise the bar over my head it does rest on that area . Do you think that could have been it ?
And thank you ! 🙂I will do what you suggested and hope for the best .

Now that you say you were squatting without a rack and raising the bar over behind your head, I would think you may have a slight strain- your thumb could have easily rotated a tad further back while taking the bar over your head.
If that is the case, it should get better in a couple of weeks.
If you can, get help loading the bar on your back, or preferably use a squat rack, if you can’t, really pay attention to what your hands are doing as you are up and overing.
Done a similar thing with an empty bar when learning to squat, and recently while trying to load a heavy backpack on my back one handed.
Cheers, h.1 -

If you're taking a heavy weight on the bar across that area of the hand then you're essentially applying pressure to it in the same way as I do when doing press ups on the Smith machine bar. So yes, I think that could be the cause. Someone else has suggested you may have pulled your thumb a bit, which could be the case, though as it is the same on both hands I would be a bit surprised.1 -
Sounds simular to what I experience a couple times 2-4 years ago.
Squats make sure your loading the bar into your back and holding very minimal weight in your hands. Might have to use a thumb over grip for a bit if you aren't already.
Using lifting straps is a good work around for deads.
Bench and press use a bull dog grip if too painful with a normal grip.

I get that pain as well. Try stretching your hands and wrists after and add some hand/wrist exercises to strengthen them. Believe me it helps!0
