If I lose weight, I earned it. If I gain, it's just water.

no I hate when people always get the excuse "its just water" and then you look at the diary for the past week and its all junk...obviously its not just water in there lol....and as far as losing weight only the person can know if they really earned it..or will they pay for it later...
  • Right?

Right. And it's also non of my business. :)

I say yes unless you have been eating more than allotted amount. We all retain fluids and the time of day, sodium levels etc. all contribute. If the loss shows and it sticks for a few days, its real.... vice versa with the gain

No everyone on here knows BroScience and according to that, if you workout for 15 minutes once every six weeks you will put on lbs of lean muscle, because not eating for 6 days and drinking nothing but Clam juice, followed by 4 days of Pop Tart Fasting will grow so much muscle you wouldn't even know what to do with it. Or its water weight, I don't know.

If you're tracking properly and on an honest calorie deficit, then most weight "gain" will be water or other "stuff", but will very rarely, if ever, be actual fat gain.

That's the key difference when discussing this, is it weight gain or fat gain. Weight gain is fine, fat gain is not.

It's not about what the scale says regarding weight, it's what your body fat % is, that's more important than seeing the scale go up or down.

Losing weight, yes, you earned it...and you "earn" fat gain as well if you continue to eat at surplus.

For me - no. Every once in awhile, I will have a night of getting up once an hour or so to pee. The next morning, my weight will be down by 5 or 6 pounds and I'm dying of thirst. By the end of the day, my weight is back up. Water out/water in.

just need to remember the body fluctuates daily. It is the body's functionality and nothing to stress over. Unless you are stuffing yourself and eating WAY too much.

For gaining weight, as long as you're not cheating and eating at a deficit, it can only be water weight.

For losing weight, it can be water weight too though. I'm always lighter after a good workout, for example.

Totally agree, I believe in following my bf% rather than what the weight in kg says, long as that keeps going down Im happy. I know I will lose some lean body mass along the way, but with weight training hope to keep my LBM loss to a minimum.

Only if you are logging everything, always making your calorie goals, and are working out regularly can you have these thoughts!
