If MFP were to clean up the glitchy and cluttered database, and reduce the price, I'd consider it.

This all day. I would wager that a lot of models run exactly along the lines of premium being the same as free just no ads. Rather than provide something people will pay for at a price, something to avoid is built in. It's not a scam or anything, doesn't mean consumers have to like it.

Plenty of sites that rely on ad support can shut you out if you are using an ad blocker and I find that more palatable even though the net result is the same, because the approach is more up front.

As regards "legit" ads for clothing and workout equipment, people know where to find that already and it won't garner nearly the click through of the charlatan stuff, because people gonna people.

I like to think "who clicks on these type of ads", but then I realize I've clicked on a lot of sponsored type content like this before, not on these rediculous type ads but on other sites that have more revelant referral network ads to me. Given how ubiquitous they are, I would imagine that the economics of them work out for both the advertiser and the hosting site.

No ads is the main reason I am glad to have premium. It seems like they at emaking the ads even more insufferable to try to get more people on it.

People should be aware that the "economics" of some ads are not that they hope to get you to their site to buy something (or to be eyeballs for the ads on their own site), but to get you to their site and download malware.

As a website owner, I find ad blockers to basically be like stealing. Sure, ads are annoying, but they are the reason why the vast majority of the content on the web is free right now. If everyone started using ad blockers, the internet as we know it would drastically change.

My website gets around 20,000 views per month, which only generates $60-$70 a month on average, but it justifies keeping the site open and paying for hosting. I'd probably have pulled it down by now if not for ad revenue.

So I'd encourage people not to ad block. It negatively affects content creators, both big and small.

I have some sympathy for this view, as I earn my living from content, although I depend on subscriber revenue, not ad revenue. Websites are free to block users who use ad blockers, so complaining about stealing seems odd. If you don't want people looking at your content without seeing ads, don't let them. Ad blockers are legal, so using one isn't stealing.

I resisted using an ad blocker for years because, as I said, I earn my living from content. But when too many websites started using more of their bandwidth (and my bandwidth) to communicate with ad server platforms, which in turn slowed the delivery of the content I'm actually interested in seeing, I gave up and installed one. I keep it set at the lowest setting, which I believe mainly gets rid of pop-ups and ads with links to sketchy malware sites. I still see lots of ads on lots of sites. Strangely, I see practically none on the MFP website. (I still see ads on the app, though, so I don't know if that absolves me from "stealing.")

This thread is being actively moderated. I'm not wasting any more time posting in this thread, as my posts are being deleted before even being allowed, as has been the case other times I've been involved in this topic.

This will be a one-sided discussion. Too bad.

I mean it's not one sided in the direction you seem to think it is. But I also had some of my posts "submitted for review" on this thread.

Exactly. It's not worth it to me to continue on this discussion. And it is being skewed, because my posts are anti *their* way and are being disallowed. I probably will get warned for even saying that.
@cmriverside I think they are being auto-zapped due to certain keywords. What's interesting to me is that Mike's posts with those same keywords are allowed, but I can't quote them and disagree, even if I don't use those same keywords in my post, just in the post I quoted.

    I know.

Yeah. Happened to me. I wonder if it's worth posting at all, considering that users provide most of the worthwhile content on this site (forums and entries for the database).

It would be nice if they would roll out that disagree button, for occasions when they zap your attempts to disagree with an actual post that lays out your reasons for disagreeing.

Mine showed up too. Not sure how long it took. I apologize for my cynicism.
