Hypothyroidism?

I have been experiencing some symptoms of hypothyroidism (weight gain, fatigue, concentration problems, menstrual issues, dry itchy skin, etc). I know I have a family history of "gland problems" on my mother's side; I can't afford to go to the doctor to get tested, since I have no insurance. Should I start eating a diet prescribed for someone with hypothyroidism to see what happens?

I take the meds. You need to find a Dr or try the health dept about a Dr. But the diet helps "SOME" just not all. I also take a mega dose of D and B12 to start my day. But hun--you are going to take the meds some day and you will feel so much better

Honestly, I would urge you to get to a doctor as soon as you possibly can! Although most people know about the external signs of hypothyroidism such as the weight gain and fatigue, the importance of a well functioning thyroid for your internal health cannot be seen and is often underestimated. I don't know whether there is the option of free clinics in your area or alternatives to this, but please get it checked out and medication started (if needed) as soon as you can :flowerforyou:

I agree 100%! If it's hypothyroidism, you can't NOT go to a doctor. I got to where I could hardly get out of the bed, my hair was falling out, I was out of breath, and not to mention the weight gain. The thyroid gland has way too many functions to be ignored. Find a free clinic closest to you and go. Soon!

On your profile page you said you needed to get your eyebrows done. What do you mean? If they have gotten thin or the outer 1/3rd fallen out, that's another indicator of hypothyroid.

I posted information about her local numbers for this service directly to the OP. I just learned about United Way's 211 service while being trained at the local food bank where hubby and I volunteer.

From http://www.211.org/: "2-1-1 provides free and confidential information and referral. Call 2-1-1 for help with food, housing, employment, health care, counseling and more. Learn more about your local 2-1-1 by looking it up here."

We've all been a paycheck away from lacking insurance, food, or a roof over our heads at some point in our lives. It's good to know this is one of the things United Way has been doing with all that money they took out of our paychecks over the years.

Go to http://www.211.org/ to search whether 211 works in your location and to find alternate numbers.

  • Check out local clinics and ask for a thyroid blood test. Not that much and then you'll know. Hypothyroidism, left untreated has been linked to future fertility problems. Not something one wants to dismiss, especially when a simple blood test could yield results showing a modest thyroid hormone adjustment will correct a deficiency.

How wonderful you are Heidi! Yes, we are all just one paycheck away from lacking all the necessities. I was hoping someone may know of these services in the area. Thank you! :flowerforyou:
