I was wondering how protein in ground chicken can vary so much. I just purchased Maple Leaf extra lean ground chicken and Myfitness Pal says 17g protein for 100g of the ground chicken. So i looked at other ground chicken and most are 22g for 3 ounces. How can it be so different.
I just searched Maple Leaf boneless chicken breast and 100g is 23g of ptotein.

The info could have been entered incorrectly, it could be ground chicken with a higher amount of fat, or both.
What does the label on your chicken say?0 -
I can't explain the difference. When I made the dish I posted, I thought about using ground chicken but the fat content of same amount of ground turkey was drastically less. It made me forget what the protein number was in chicken...and about using it 🤣0

Outside of accuracy issues in the database, there's also the potential for liquid solutions to be added to the meat. For instance, a quick check of Perdue "fresh ground chicken" shows that it has "up to 1% of a solution of vinegar and rosemary extract".
That said, even what should be more or less identical items on the standard reference entries on the USDA's website are different. You're never going to be 100% accurate.1 -
It's likely accurate. I checked another nutrition site, and they had it listed at 22g of protein for 125 gram serving size which comes down to about 18g per 100 gram serving size, but depending on how it is rounded, it could be listed as 17 grams.
Ground chicken is not made from chicken breast. That is the difference in those nutritional values. I am not sure what parts of the chicken it is made from, but even the "extra lean" ground chicken has more than double the fat of chicken breast. So they are using fattier, less protein dense part of the chicken.1 -
The fat in ground chicken can vary quite a bit. And when that goes up, the protein will go down.

Are you looking at your actual brand in the database...have you compared it to the label. That's all that is important, not a bunch of other entries in the database.
Database entries are user entered...who knows what the hell someone else entered. Also, 17g vs 22g isn't a huge difference.0 -
Does the brand have lean, regular, different percentages of fat options?0
