Recommending too many calories?

Hello, I'm new to this app. It's telling me I should eat 1700 calories a day for 1/2 lb per week loss. I have 20 lbs to lose. 1700 seems like an awful lot and that I would gain a ton. I'm in the 'active' range as I've been hitting the gym for 5 days a week for 4 weeks now. 52 yr old at 5'3". Your thoughts??

Using the app wrong.
That Activity Level is daily life ONLY, no exercise.
If you have household responsibilities even with a desk job - that would be Lightly Active.
If you come home from desk job hit the couch, table, TV, computer, and then bed, not much of anything else outside exercise - Sedentary.
When you actually do your workouts you log them honestly for time at the stated intensity level (running certain pace, ect).
Many will take the stated calorie burn and re-enter 1/2 of them just incase your selected workouts are being inflated because they don't burn much overall.
Now you have an eating goal helping you to learn a life lesson regarding weight management:
You do more you eat more.
You do less you eat less. (that's the kicker one)
In a diet a tad less in either case.
Good selection of weight loss goal with very little to lose.
But that also means you better be accurate with your food logging by weight, since margin is so small.
Also, it may seem like a lot of calories if all you have seen is 1200 calorie diets in past experience or magazine/website click bait.
But until you actually log what you used to eat accurately - most have no clue how much they were eating prior to know if the goal is high or low.5
