Hello everyone,
My name is Joshua and I am hoping to lose some weight before my wedding in August 2020. I’ve used My Fitness Pal in the past and have seen significant short term results. However, I would always fall back into old habits.
About Me
I’m 28 years old and began to gain weight shortly after graduating high school and began working full time. I didn’t make enough money to afford a car, and thus, I had to stop playing hockey. Becoming an adult meant more responsibilities and staying active quickly plummeted to the bottom of my priority list. I worked hard, saved up money and got my post secondary degree. It took me about a year to find a decent job, at which point I moved in with my now fiancée. To this day, we still don’t own a car, as we are focused on paying for our mortgage as soon as possible. However, we are planning on purchasing our first car soon after the wedding as we believe it will become a necessity once we want to start having children. At which point, I’m hoping I can start playing hockey again and introduce more physical activity to my daily routine.
Obstacles
- Lack of physical activity
- Energy drink consumption
- Impulse control
I believe I need to focus on these three areas to attain success in losing weight. I’ve been successful at losing weight in the past, but I’ve never been able to keep the weight off. Losing weight for me has always been simple; if calories in are less than calories out, then weight loss will occur.
The Plan
I hope to start off small with increasing my level of physical activity. Unfortunately, I do not have much free time to dedicate to physical activity at the moment. My goal is to make an effort to go out for a walk at least once a week for starters. One benefit of not owning a car is that I walk to do groceries every week during the warmer seasons. In the winter, we have our groceries delivered.
I will admit that I have a problem with consuming energy drinks. This problem also used to include the consumption of alcoholic beverages. However, I have been sober now for over a year. I’m hoping that I can cut out energy drinks entirely from my diet, or at the very least find a suitable substitute. I’m currently trying something called G-Fuel which has about a quarter of the calories per serving of your average energy drink. I’m really enjoying the flavors and I only drink about 1.5 servings a day. In contrast, I was drinking three energy drinks or more a day before.
Impulse control is the only thing I haven’t come up with a plan for yet. It feels like I’m on autopilot sometimes, especially when things get rough. I’ll often resort to ordering comfort food and binge eat to make myself feel better. I’ve been working on my impulse control and mental health as well. I suffer from anxiety and I take medication to help cope. I’m planning to see my doctor in October for a follow up and am hoping I can find myself a psychotherapist as I believe they would be able to help me manage my impulse control.
