What is the spookiest novel or short story you've ever read? I'm looking for new horror/thriller stories to read for October (and because I need a break from reading Magic: the Gathering novels). Suggest away, but tell us a bit about the book for those of us who haven't read it.

I liked the Ire of the Void novella for the Arkham Horror world from Fantasy Flight games.

If you like older stuff, Burn, Witch, Burn! by A. Merritt was cool.

I’m biased cause I write horror short stories tho

ooooh I like the kitty pic.

Hm, I like old Gothic horrors - the old skool language and the mouldy old castles and stuff like that. Any is good. The Monk was one I really liked. And anything with Vampyres. And damsels in distress in mouldy old castles. There are so many. Ghosts and *kitten*.

Graham Masterton is a name that also comes to mind for more modern horror books.

And good old fashioned ghost stories.

I once stole a book from the IKEA living room display - I still have it. 100 Ghost Stories. It's awesome and belongs on my bookshelf, not the fake IKEA living room.

Notebook Found in a Deserted House-

super creepy short story by Robert Bloch. kinda lovecraftian (he was a protege of Lovecraft when he was younger) but more than anything it's just a good old fashioned monster in the woods story. plus it happens around Halloween

And this isn't a book but it's an awesome dramatic reading of a great story, read by Boris Karloff. I'll throw this around til I dieeeeeeee
