Feeling embarrassed!

I bike commute and I love it! It took me long to decide to do it, since it's 9 miles each way, but I love the fact that I don't need any extra time to work out! If the guys in the car were explicitly laughing at you (which I find hard to believe), than that's too low for you to let this bother you. I would be really proud, if I were you! :flowerforyou: Enjoy the scenery, enjoy the feeling of freedom, enjoy the sounds of nature...
Why don't you try some workout videos (google for popsugars) at home? It will give you the kick you need, make you feel absolutely great and you'll save the time that you need to get to the gym and back. However, if you are inexperienced, take care not to push your limits. That's what a trainer would teach you. Also, the gym has people of all sizes, shapes and condition level. Don't be shy!
I admire you for taking this step in the right direction! :hug:6 -
The fact that you got on your bike and cycled to work, despite how you felt, is AMAZING! You should feel so proud of yourself, really! As for the wasters in the car, forget about them (I bet they’ll have forgotten about you and I don’t mean that in a bad way of course). This is going to sound nuts but whenever something happens in my life that bothers me, this is what I do:
At night, when I’m in bed, I think about the things that have bothered me that day, or even in the past. I picture a small box with a padlock. I imagine myself opening the box and putting all of the things that have bothered me inside the box. I lock it shut and picture myself storing it in the back of my brain, never to be opened again. Crazy? Probably lol but it works for me!9 -

Maybe not the best idea while riding. You need to be able to hear motors coming up behind you, etc.
I should have specified, TRAIL RIDING not on the road.2 -
Gotta try to ignore the lowest common denominator. Just gotta, nothin' else for it.
Just so you know, personally when I see somebody who isn't already fit out biking, etc... it's an inspiration to me. I think, "*Kitten* yeah! If she/he can do it, so can I!" So if ya run into any more haters on your commute, try to remember you maybe also just passed several people at that intersection that you inspired.
...and your post inspired me today, so thank you for that.7 -
So proud of you for getting out there and doing the hard work, even when it's uncomfortable. I know it's easier said than done, but you are working to improve your life. Know that we support you regardless of what some insensitive jerks might say.3

Lots of people are nice....but lots are total jerks! You should be so proud for conquering your fear and doing this! Do not let the jerks take your power! You alone own your power. Next time, don't look at them. Just take a deep breath and give yourself a hug for your effort! You got this!
Agree with the above. Concentrate on the nice in people. And ignore those d-bags! Good on you for getting on that bike!

No one has to live in our bodies. You will not be deterred. Let them eat your dust. Keep tooling along and don't look back over your shoulder unless they're following waaay too closely for safety.1

I have had cans, bottles, apple cores - you name it - thrown at me while cycling. Been called every rude name in the book. F**k 'em.....keep doing what you're doin'1

Yep, been there, done that. Not while cycling... I'm a walker. And it never fails no matter what state I've lived in or what city, when ever I first start walking to lose weight...d-bags always laugh or hollar out the car windows.
I just take pleasure in knowing that I can lose my weight and get fit, and someday they'll be older, after marriage and kids and struggle with weight... And I hope some jerk yells out the window at them!2 -
Don't let them take away your power.....they have nothing on you. It's like playground bullying at the adult level.2

I have a little over 130 lbs. to lose. I researched gyms and health clubs knowing that just doing the research doesn't get me any closer to my goal. After 2 months of procrastinating, I joined a health club. I'm lucky, due to my age, it's covered by medicare so my cost is only what I invest in myself. I am determined to do this and I can't worry about what anybody else thinks. I really respect you; it takes more than just a little courage to put hesitation aside and push forward. While the bullys are riding around in a car, you're taking control of your health; who do you think is better off? I wish you well. You have already achieved success, keep on riding!

I read a great little quote yesterday that I think if very relevant to situations like this:
"Don't take criticism from people you would never go to for advice."

I remember a young guy that was bullied and he said that is ok, one day I will be a doctor and leave them in the dust and he did! Yep, just keep on and you will show them one day, you will look great, who cares what they think!4

Look at that beautiful baby of yours and know that you are doing it for her (and yourself, of course) and don't worry what others say.2

You will always get a $$ holes like that, the way I see it, you will get fitter and better at your cycling, you are keeping yourself safe for your family with the helmet, etc. They however will still be a $$ holes. At least you're doing something about getting yourself fitter!2
-
you are doing great things. keep it up. keep working on being a better you. that itself will be a great reward for you and your family
they will still be turds1 -
Rejoice and smile! They aren't laughing at you - they are loudly proclaiming at anyone else trying unsuccessfully to forget their own failure.
Use it on the next ride and prove them wrong. One of the strongest motivators in my life was having people telling me I couldn't do things. It gave me that push I needed to prove them wrong.
...and I hated that helmet at first, but it has saved my skull on more than one occassion.

I don't know you obviously, but reading your post made me really proud of you. Starting is definitely hard, but there will be little milestones along the way that will make all of this worth it. I guarantee you one of these days you are going to realize that your clothes are starting not to fit anymore because of the inches you have lost. Whatever you do, don't let a strangers rudeness be the trigger that makes you quit. Use that as motivation to push you and the results you see will speak for themselves.7
