Abd crunches

I just started doing chair abd crunches a few days ago. I don't feel at all sore in my abd, just my thighs in the back. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

something that works much better and faster is called the plank. essentially lay on your belly, get your elbows underneath you, and straighten your body such that you are in a similar position as a push-up. hold this as long as you can, which for most people not having done any abs is about 30 seconds. as you get better, you can prop yourself on one elbow and one foot and try to stay flat. when i do this i will switch off elbows at some arbitrary time so that my shoulders didn't tire faster than my abs. to work your sides you can go up on one elbow and one foot sideways. time each session and try to go a little longer every day.
also a video from the 80's is called 8 minute abs, which can be found on youtube or on VHS. i did this and then plank for as long as i could every day for a month in preparation for a weight lifting class and my abs burned for 3 weeks straight. in the end i could go one elbow (switching off every minute) for three minutes straight.0 -
I had wrist surgery 2 weeks ago and shoulder surgery 7 months ago so doing exercises where I have to put any weight on them yet is difficult. I hope to see that get better with time. Anyway I was looking for some exercise for the abd where I would not have to be on my hands or shoulders for awhile, thus the chair exercise. I will check out the you tube video and see if can do that.0

Can you explain how you do chair crunches? I do the regular kind, and even though I try not to, I always strain my neck.
