Does anyone follow a specific routine to support their riding programs? I'm not competing, just looking for more ways to strengthen my body to make riding a very large, strong stubborn horse not such a challenge. Just curious what others do.

I used to do power yoga. it would strengthen my thighs and keep my flexible. it also helped calm me and thus the horse.

My workouts are not based on riding the horses, but they are set up based on riding and racing my motorcycle. Yes, very different sports, but my recent return to riding horses proved that whatever I'm doing is working for that because I thought I'd be crazy sore riding again, when that hasn't been the case at all, and physically speaking, riding the horses hasn't even really been a challenge.

While I probably have a bit more upper body focus than you would need riding horses, I also incorporate a LOT of core, full body, dynamic, balance, and, of course, leg work into my routines. I have a couple different workout plans that I can draw from.

What I did, and what you may find useful, is to hunt down a personal trainer familiar with what you are wanting to do (in this case, riding horses - mine were track/racing enthusiasts). Work with them to help you set up a training plan, knowing your own weaknesses while riding (is it general endurance, leg strength, core strength, a combination?). They don't need to work out with you if you know what you're doing, you can pay a trainer just to set up a plan that you then follow on your own.
