October was a miserable month for me with a major back issue that made getting out of bed quite a challenge most mornings.
On worst day I had to be taken off to hospital in an ambulance as the pain was off the scale.
Entonox was useless, all it did was add a headache to my misery. Cocktail of paracetamol, codeine and tramadol didn't do much and needed morphine eventually.
But I'm recovering now and starting to get back to walking and using an exercise bike. One leg is very down on power due to nerve impingement, very reluctant to get to a high cadence and my CV fitness is dreadful but it's a start.
November goal is purely to get fitter while waiting for an appointment with a specialist to decide the way forward including surgery as an option.0 -

Sunday -- we participated in a shorter version of the first ride of the Audax season!! It was a lovely ride, and the organiser and his family put on a good BBQ after. There were about 17 or 18 riders, a good turnout for us, and I think everyone else rode the official 100 km.

November is looking up a bit.
Same as earlier episode this year seem to have no progress for ages and then suddenly the nerve impingment reduces and pain lessens and function improves.
Had a couple of long walks (4 & 7 miles) alongside the Thames which seemed to ease some of the stiffness.
Tried one outside ride but bumps very uncomfortable and I would win a prize for least elegant mounting and dismounting from a bike.....
Training indoors is progressing and have my cadence back and power is coming back slowly but my normally stronger right leg is well done on power compared to my left (and recently injured/rehabbed) left leg.
54/46% instead of my normal 49/51% power split.

Hello! Popping in to introduce myself. I'm a cyclist and have decided to try to lose a bit of weight in the hope of making hills a bit easier. I mainly race time trials on flattish courses but always seem to struggle when the road goes uphill and as I've entered the tour of Flanders sportive next year I need to do something about it!
So far I've lost about 3kg since late September which I'm quite pleased with. I'm currently taking a week away from proper logging/the scale on a cycling holiday in Gran Canaria. Lots of miles but also lots of ice cream to recover with. And Fanta at the top of hills. I seem to be getting a lot of my calories from Fanta...2 -
Hello all. I am an avid cyclist and have been racing for 33 years. I crashed hard last winter and it required a couple surgeries. During recovery I gained some weight and havent lost it. I used to eat anything I wanted but now that I am 54 my body likes to hang onto the weight I guess.
So I am using MFP for the 1st time. MFP helps me understand what I am eating and how much. After a couple weeks of observations I made some adjustments and it started working. In 7 weeks I have lost 5 lbs! I want to lose another 5 lbs through this winter. That will put me at my racing weight. Goal is 143lbs.
Global Cycling Network (GCN) has several short videos on how to lose weight while cycling/training. If you train a lot and compete your calorie needs are unique. It is all timing...eating the right food at the right time so you get maximum benefit from your training so you get faster AND lose weight. Here is one older vid. Much better week this week as my back continues to recover.
Four consecutive days training indoors on the Wattbike (81 "miles" / 4 hours total).
FTP test confirmed how much power and fitness I've lost - about 16% down on last Decembers PB.
Mostly had to do two 30 min sessions as didn't trust my back to cope with standing cycling (for saddle relief, I find indoor riding really uncomfortable) but today broke through that hurdle without any reaction and did a brutal "VO2 max builder" for an hour and it confirmed my HR rises too fast and recovers too slow on the intense 4 min intervals.
But overall delighted with progress this month.1 -

Managed four indoor cycling sessions (87 "miles" - just over 4hrs) this week.
Fitness improving but not reflected in a FTP test as got too hot very quickly, HR went too high to sustain the pace I wanted but at least managed to match previous test or I would have been really grumpy.
Also back to the gym for first upper body and core workout for ages, shockingly weak and my shoulder injury clearly needs more rehab - most disgusting and loud clunk during planking and hurting in certain planes of movement. But at least it's a step in the right direction.

I discovered just how weak my upper body is when I attempted to cross a set of overhead rings in a playground. You hang from the first two, then let go with one hand and grab the next, etc. and thus cross the sand without touching ground.
I could hang from the first two for a moment. That was it. There was absolutely no way I could let go with one hand to reach for the next ring.
I did injure my left shoulder in a bicycle crash in 2007 (subluxation) and it does kinda fall out of place now and then still ... but I suspect I need to pick up a set of weights more often!!0 -

Repeated my 20 minute FTP test as it simply bugged me that last one didn't go well.
A better fan kept me cooler for longer, paced it better and only hit my maximum sustainable HR three quarters of the way though.
Scored 201w which is well down on last winter but well up on initial test scores since recovering from my last disc prolapse, got to be happy with progress and I do like the feeling that a test went as well as it could have on the day.
Noticed that I have also now recorded 25,000 miles on Strava since I returned to cycling in 2013.1 -
