What kind of running injury is this?

Options
I ran a 5k (for charity) yesterday. Near the beginning, the road was unpaved and a bit rocky. My right ankle, towards the inside started to feel sore. Dull and achy. Not a sharp pain at all, it didn't stop me from finishing the race.

I tried to walk it off, but by the end of the day it was still sore if I stepped on it, and it got a bit swollen. The area of the Achilles tendon is slightly green-orange, like a very mild bruise.

Putting ice helps to relieve the swelling a bit. It is only sore if I step on it. Not painful, just dull and achy.

sounds like a strained tendon? I'd stick with using ice, elevate it as much as you can and should improve soon. If not, I'd consider the doc

Have you got good arch support in your shoes?

Ice, elevation, no painkillers for 24 hours (most reduce the beneficial swelling), then ibuprofen (or any painkiller you might need), stay of it a bit more and see how it feels and see your GP if it is still painful.

Not sure if it is the same as mine or not. I injured my posterior tibial tendon last October. This is the tendon that goes under the ankle bone. It then goes under the foot where it attaches. On the other end - it goes up the leg. Mine never had a sharp one time pain ~ just started hurting one day and kept getting worse. I was playing tennis all these days. Finally after about the 4th day - i stopped - said no more and saw a podiatrist. He told me to take off for awhile and thought it would get better as he didn't think it was torn. But 3 weeks went by and it wasn't any better. Had an MRI - and yep - it was torn. So my advice - don't run anymore right now.
If it continues - see an orthopedic foot/ankle specialist. Hope its not that! Mine was not discolored though. Yours could me more connected to the achilles and not like mine. Best advice - see a doc. Oh - also - my injury is more prone to flat footed people. Thats me!

R.I.C.E is the best thing you can do for now and if it persist then I would suggest going and seeing your doctor..... I came across this article that sounds similar to what you are referring too but like I said if no better soon then see your physician....

Sounds like an injury that I got the same way. I was running in a very crowded 5K/family fun walk. there were so many people on the sidewalks so I ran the majority of the race on gravel. I had the same nagging pain starting the day after the race and it didn't subside for 3 months! I got xrays to see if it was a stress fracture and it wasn't. I was told to ice everyday and not just after a run and I use The Stick on it a couple of times a day also. The pain has finally let up!

I only started running seriously a couple months ago. I had my feet and gait examined at a running store. I have the New Balance 1080s, made for neutral runners with narrow feet. Supposedly these are right for me.

I generally have weak ankles, but it's the first time this kind of injury happened.

I don't have a GP anymore, so seeing a doctor would require spending an entire day waiting at the emergency room, probably just to be told to go home and RICE. Is it really worth it if I'm not "in pain"? It just aches when I step on it.

Only if after a prolong period you are still experiencing the pain.... R.I.C.E it for now and see how it feels in a few days if no better then you might want to consider seeing the doctor..... Best of Luck.....

Agree with everyone else- R.I.C.E. Could be any number of things. Are you running everyday, no rest days?

No, I can't run every day. I started "training" in may, but I'd run only once or twice a week, that's my max due to my low energy. I haven't run at all in the past 2 weeks though because I kinda relapsed energy-wise and couldn't do any cardio at all, and had to save up my energy for this 5k.

So what would be the name of this kind of injury? someone said strained tendon?

What kind of running shoes you are using? Wearing good quality shoes for running is a must it prevents injury in the first place. I own New Balance for all my sport shoes it's ultralight and have breathable air mesh keep your feet dry which prevent blister on your feet my favorite running shoes model is 1400v2. http://www.runningpair.com/newattitude
