Mud Run Training

Just signed up for my first mud run. Was wondering what kind of training I should do to help prepare for it? any insight from others about what they wish they would have trained more of or what they did train that helped. Thank you in advanced

You are going to have so much fun. What I have done in the past was work on cardio using the treadmill with different speeds and inclination to simulate the conditions that you will encounter. I also work on flexibility and agility by stepping up on benched and stairs. Also you need to work your upper body with pull ups and rows, this will help you be able to pull yourself up the mud hills using the ropes. A lot of time the mud run will have a web site with the course layout and a suggest training schedule. Hopefully I hadn't discourage you to much because it is a lot of fun and sense of accomplishment. Good Luck.0

I went to a mud run yesterday as a spectator and cheering section for my husband and our two children who did it. (I can't do it, becuase of an old dog attack to my hand/wrist makes climbing ropes and hanging from my arms almost impossible.)
I had alot of fun. It was in Plant City, Florida. So, you can imagine how hot, muggy, and muddy it was.
The good: They had all the free water, gatoraid, popcorn, shaved ice, pork, chicken, rice, and black beans one coud eat. The local fitness companies were there, giving out freebies. There were also fresh water showers provided by a water truck, which a few of us spectators used. We found a tent to stay under.
The people running the race were of all ages and walks of life. Very few were overweight. Many were of top fitness level, like personal fitness trainer types. Some were flabby. Outrageous costumes worn by about 20%. I saw the Incredibles, a man with a red speedo bikini and alot of body hair, a man in a black spiderman costume carrying a flag, men with ballerina tootoos, and scores of others. After, some had way too much to drink after the race. Like, one woman was falling down into the mud and having trouble getting up.
The bad: It was HOT. It was in a huge cow pasture, that stunk of the cow manure. Where the specatators were, it was ankle deep in mud/cow poop in large areas. I couldn't help but think of the worms, round worms, in the soil that everyone was getting exposed to. Also, there was a dug out of water under one of the final obstacles. This obstacle was about 15 feet high, and 15 feet long, and was a monkey bar/swing/rope contraption. Most partipants fell right into the chest high deep water below, getting this muddy glop up their noses. I couldn't help but think of the brain eating amoebas that could be in there. There was another muddy dugout filled with water that the kids were playing in.
Even as a spectator, you better prepare to be dirty and hot.
Overall: Don't forget your sunscreen, shade, closed toed shoes, water jugs in your vehicle to rinse off with afterwards, clean clothes, a portable changing room would be an added bonus, camping-type bath wipes, and, most importantly, don't forget your sense of humor!
How did the family do? My hubbie did P90X and plays hockey. He also runs 10-15 miles a day, if he's able. He did fine on his first mud run (5 miles). Only the last obstacle gave him a little trouble (the 15' high one). My 6 year old did the children's run with no help. But, he's super strong. The tween reported she had sore abs today. Everyone had to take a few baths, foot bath, and jump in the pool . .. . and we all still feel dirty.
We're planning the "Tough Mudder" in November. Life's tough, but when you're stupid it's even tougher.

Totally agree with dmuller... look at the the course and you can see what your gonna need to work on. What race are you doing? I just did the Warrior Dash yesterday without training what-so-ever:embarassed: :ohwell: I did pretty good though... the hills were the worst part for me. I was huffing and puffing to get up them which in turn winded me for the obstacles. Definitely focus on running with inclines and get some upper body strength training in and you'll be fine. Also, I don't know how competitive you are but for me I always go into a mud run with the mindset that time doesn't matter just finish the race. Setting good time is a bonus but moving too quickly in these kinds of conditions could easily cause injuries. Your gonna have a blast!0

I wish I did more hill training for my first one, but my first one was SUPER hilly. Like, go straight up a mountain kind of thing. Make sure your shoes have a decent amount of tread left so they can dig in to help get you out of the mud pits.0
