Sore Muscles

Recently I started training for a 5K. I just finished my first week and my legs and such are starting to really feel the workout. Is there any way to relieve-or even reduce-the pain in my calves? I do stretches before and after my workout, but I still find my legs hurting. Any suggestions?

This sounds weird but I use horse arnica ice cooling gel. I massage it in just before bed!0

Do you have properly fitted running shoes? Like, from a running store where someone analyzed your gait?
Does your training program allow adequate rest days?
Try using a foam roller and supplementing magnesium.0 -

Also, what kind of surface are you running on? Is it concrete, asphalt, or trail?
Concrete can be very rough on your joints, asphalt is better, trail is even better.
Shoes are huge, btw - they can make or break your running experience. Do not scrimp, and get properly fitted.
For calves, do some stretching afterwards. I like to hang my heels off of a step (or log, or whatever is handy).0 -

This, and here's my own method for eliminating soreness:
1) Cool down by walking for 5-10 minutes
2) Stretch afterwards
Extra measures:
- Elevate legs when soreness kicks in. I have no idea if this works for all soreness, but I know it helps alleviate swelling
- Ibuprofen
Are your legs strong? I know that sounds like a stupid question, but strength training could help with muscle soreness after running. Also, I'm training for a 5k too! I'll add you0
