Battling a New Addiction

Hello All! Happy Sunday!

I am new (well, a restart after about 7 years), but am determined to be back. 13 years ago, I checked myself into rehab for a drug addiction. 2 and a half months through the program, I came out clean, and have been clean for 13 years. Shortly after that, became an alcoholic, and was one for 2 years. Was able to get out of that without the rehab, and while I still have the occasional brew, I barely touch the stuff, anymore. 2 for 2 on the addictions!

Well, then came food. It's essential, we all need it, right? Well, I started eating. A lot. And barely working out. For 6 years. So here I am, before you,.today, weighing 460. The HEAVIEST I have ever seen a scale. It's demoralizing, depressing, and disgusting. So have decided to make 2020 my year (using the next 5 weeks as a launching pad).

Enough of the serious talk, I am a really chill guy. Passionate about sports, Star Wars, and science. I LOVE getting to know new people, and hope there are also some Star Wars loving, sciencey type folks that would be willing to join me! I remember my last go around, I did the best I could with commenting on posts, but am excellent on DMs.

Anyway, thanks for following along. Send me a request, if you'd like!

-KO 🤙

Welcome (back)! You sound like you're in the right mental place to turn your health around, and you've already kicked two addictions, so you definitely have the mental discipline. Good luck and may the force be with you!

Hi. I'm new here but I can relate (from a 3rd person point of view) on your addictions and rehab. I know how hard rehab is and the following 2 years after rehab is just as stressful especially not being able to drive until your 2 years clean etc. You've come a really long way and I appreciate your efforts.

I think if you have some activities in your life it would counter your food eating habits such as going for a 30 minute walk on a daily basis which can burn between 100 and 300 calories each time depending on your speed and the terrain. I track my calories and steps with a smart watch which is really insightful.

The best thing to do is to remember not to take too much on at one time and overwhelm yourself. From my own experience, starting with a 30 minute walk on a daily basis was a great starting point for me as it's simple, easy and there's no pressure involved. There are also local walking groups I'm looking to start attending. If you start walking and burning calories, you'll feel healthier after just 4 days and you'll see a difference in your motivation and breathing.

It's a great way to start and when you feel better, you want to eat better so you'll end up saying "nah, I don't want to eat that. I'll have something healthier".

Sorry for the long message. I'm glad you're here today and btw, I'm a treky 😜
