Should the net calories equal my goal amount of calories or should I just eat my goal amount of calories and not look at net calories?

You should be looking at the number of remaining calories: on the right hand side in the app, number in green.
The goal amount of calories (number on the left) is calculated by MFP based on your goal settings and the activity setting you have selected (activity level not taking into account exercise). So the number of calories you can actually eat can be higher (if you have exercised and added this into your diary) or sometimes lower (if you use an activity tracker and you haven't reached the activity level you entered in MFP, which is called a negative calorie adjustment).0
