Advice on weightlifting!

Hi,

So I have been a member on MFP for several months now, and my main form of exercise has been the stationary bike. I dabbled with 30DS and a month squat challenge, but since coming off holiday a month ago I have left the strength exercises alone.

My aim is to lose 28lbs, and so far I have lost 16lb. I am 5 foot 4 inche, 25 years old and currently weigh 138lbs (just in case someone wants to know!).

I have heard so many posts on how great lifting is etc etc, and seeing as I cant afford the gym, I am having to do home workout.

Atm I have 3 sets of dumbbells (1, 2 and 3 Kg), and am looking to buy some heavier ones. How much heavier should I go. I am looking at these;

Also is there any other equipment that might come in handy??

So I was thinking of strength training for 4 days a week and splitting it into lower body and upper body. So 2 sessions on each a week. What does everyone think to this?? I am very much open to better suggestions! I still want to keep up with my stationary biking but feel ready to start toning!!

Thanks in advance for your help :)

Just my opinion... as everyone is different... depending on what kinda of lifting you are interested in doing... along with how much space u have at home you might want to consider getting a barbell, you can use for compound lifts (squats, over head press, bench press, rows, deadlifts, etc) To me the benefits of full body strength training versus just weighted dumbell exercises are so much more beneficial.

Which ever you decide...stick with it and best wishes

Yes I did consider a barbel! I used to enjoy using it in body pump!

    Also another question:

How many sets and reps would be good? I used to do 3-4 sets of 15-20 reps with light weights but it should be lower reps for heavier weights?

If you have no experience I would recommend following a programme, I'm using New Rules of Lifting for Women but I work out at a gym, you may find others that are more appropriate for home workouts!!

I have found it really helps to have a plan to follow and instructions on how to perform the various lifts.

    Good Luck!

I follow Stronglifts 5 x 5.. I prefer it to New Rules as its 5 sets 5 reps at a heavier weight.. .. Im in my 4th week.. Its an every other day program and even thou its been challenging especially on days that I've increased weight.. its not complicated. You can also you tube stronglifts 5 x 5 and watch videos on proper form and getting started.

Ive noticed a nice change in my back side with the squats and deadlifts... Researching what u need for equipment and what type of program you will stick too is key

One of the most frugal choices, do some body weight exercises. About all you might have to buy would be a doorway pull up bar. Beyond that, you can do a great deal with a set of elastic bands. You might be able to find those used and save some.

As mentioned, try excelling at body weight exercises first, then increase the resistance with weights. Squats, pull ups, and push ups are great starting exercises to learn with good form and full ROM.

Those dumbbells are perfect. You can always buy larger plates to add if you need them next year. I prefer dumbbells over barbells because they are more versatile. I would do a full-body workout every 2-3 days, not a split. I posted one such program in my profile. It's best to follow a program instead of piecing together your own, at least until you get more knowledge.
