How much sodium should I have in a day if I want to limit water retention?

As long as you don't have swings in sodium levels, you shouldn't see a ton of water retention.

The primary concern as to water retention is cardiac insufficiency (unfortunately now called "heart failure"). If you have heart failure follow your doctors orders. If you are just trying to trick the bathroom scale, try something else.

Ester weight gets retained for a lot of toehr easons besides sodium. Trying to "beat" it on the scale is a tiring an ultimately futile endeavor. It's better to just focus on hitting your calorie deficit and see the scale mvoe over the long term due to fat loss.

Water weight changes are part of how a healthy body functions, to balance electrolytes, to heal, to metabolize various foods, and more.

Don't try to game your body. You won't make it healthier if you succeed, and you might make it less healthy.

Just try to understand your weight fluctuations (what causes them, how long they last) so you can relax and trust the process without stressing out.

Changing your thinking to align it with objective reality is invariably much more successful than trying to change reality to coddle your errant thinking.
