Exercising when you live on the second floor

So I need help with this!
I often find myself wanting to exercise inside my apartment but I am worried about stomping, jumping, or really anything to do with being too loud for my neighbors bellow my apartment. I have been doing squats lately which isn't loud but I was wondering what others do or might do if you lived on a second floor and wanted to do some exercises inside the apartment on occasion. I still go to the gym and try to exercise outside, but sometimes I just want to do it in the comfort of my own home

People can be so nice if you give them a chance. Try going downstairs and explaining the situation to your neighbors. Tell them how important it is to you not to bother them; if they feel comfortable telling you when they're usually out, that would be a big help. Give them your phone number and tell them not to hesitate to call right away if you are bothering them. Buy them some flowers or a healthy treat every six months or so to thank them for helping you with this.0

and by the way, kudos to you for having the courtesy to be concerned about your neighbors!0

Yeah, don't do jumping exercises! Focus on strength exercise... keep it up with the squats, add push ups, yoga, other body-resistance exercises.
I would think that as long as you're not jumping/stomping or working out in heels, it's not going to be an issue for the downstairs neighbors.0 -

because if you don't tell them you will have an awesome neighbor like me with a loud mouth!!! lol my upstairs neighbors kids apparently loved wwe or whatever its called so they would wrestle and slam each other and it sounds like gun shots going off or thunder!!! I'm a heavy sleeper let me tell you and these kids were able to wake me up real fast0 -
aerobics. I lived on the 2nd floor and did beach body Debbie seibbers slim in 6. If you do any jumping jacks or things, try it in the day time, or run up and down the stairs0

I agree with above. Chances are the neighbours won't be fussed about 30 mins or so in normal awake hours - go and explain the sitation and you'll probably find that as long as they or their kids are not sleeping at that time, they won't care. I wouldn't care. I'd actually love someone to be considerate enough to consult me about it too
ETA: If you still want / need some quieter exercises, keep up the squats. Also, most strength based exercises won't make a noise. You could also walk/run up and down the stairs outside0 -
Everlast 2x6 folding mat. I jump around and my downstair neighbors don't hear a thing.0

I live on the 2nd floor too and always wanted to do exercises late at night after the kids go to sleep but know it would be too loud for the downstairs neighbors. I did find a youtube video on stand-up exercises that I do.0

Can you workout during the day, when your neighbors are possibly out for the day? Do you have carpet or hard wood floors? Perhaps you can put a thicker mat on your floor to muffle the noise. But I would probably stay away from jogging in place, jumping rope or jumping jacks.
If you're doing some kind of workout DVD, I can't imagine it generating that much noise.
Just my $.02.0 -
As someone who lives on the bottom floor, I commend you for being so considerate. Most people aren't. I agree with the person who said talk to your neighbors and find out when they're out or won't be bothered. Don't assume they're out during the day, though, because some people work nights (like me) and therefore sleep during the day.0

Something with lots of jumping, stomping, and throwing weights on the floor. :P I think that there are a lot of options even with the workout DVD's that are really popular they usually have a low impact modifier. That should reduce noise. And also I agree with getting a mat. It does make a big difference in sound.0

Learn to swing, snatch, clean and goblet squat a kettlebell. It's silent (unless you drop it!) and an extremely tough metabolic workout. It's unlikely you'll do something else that will give you the conditioning and calorie burning effects of a proper kb workout. And it's kind on your neighbours ears and your knee joints, too.0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8CRUrRekOQ <---this video was made for indoor quiet cardio
I also find doing calisthenics (push ups, sit ups, crunches, pull ups etc) very quiet
Pilates also works great it is quiet0
