Hi just got started with this today. I've noticed that quite a lot of the food in the food diary is measured in cups. How big is a cup?

Thanks!

Invest in a food scale its the only way to be accurate :)

It is best if you buy yourself cooking measuring cups, however depending on your hand size it would be the equivalent of your hand in a ball give or take.
  • Thanks everyone! (And sorry for disappointing some of you!)

1 cup does not always = 8 ounces. You can only use ounces if it is a liquid. A cup of food can be any weight and is best weighed. If you wanted 4 ounces of meat, you could measure it as 1/2 a cup, for example. You need a scale to be accurate.

Keep searching the database to find the equivalent ingredient in a weight (usually it's there both in metric and imperial), or enter it yourself. Cups measure volume not weight. Measuring weight is much more accurate.

One inch difference between bust and band per letter. Oh wait...

A US cup is a unit of volume that is... one cup.
It's also 8 fluid ounces. A fluid ounce is a unit of volume, too, it doesn't always weigh one ounce.

A non-fluid ounce is a unit of weight, not volume.

That said, measuring things by weight is more accurate (ounces or grams), so a digital scale really helps here.
