Train for the trail without long hikes

I came across this article about training for hikes. We get questions about this from time to time, so reposting here.

It seems like the gist of the article is that endurance transfers pretty well between activities, so your best bet is to go long not hard. I agree with this. All my time on the bike seems to have helped with everything else I like to do.
At the bottom of the page they link to another article in the series, about night hiking in the Enchantments. I enjoyed reading that one very much.
