Pre Diabetic

I’m 67 and was just told I’m pre diabetic. My BS is 100 fasting. I’m finding it hard to cut carbs because I love bread and ice cream. Any suggestions?

have you tried halo ice cream or make your own healthy stuff. as far as bread switch it up to rye or brown bread. i know the white bread is so yummy. you can have it just cut down on how much you have of either

100 is right on the line. Your dr might want to do the A1C which is a better measure of blood sugars over time (3mos). As for the bread and ice cream- can you limit either portions or number of times per week you have these? Just delay a bit but still include them, just less of them. For me I’ve gone cold turkey on bread and sugar and simple carbs because I *really* don’t want diabetes (I’m now trying to reverse prediabetes). Good luck.

Maybe try finding healthier substitutions (i.e banana "nice cream" instead of diary ice cream). Be mindful of what you are eating to help decide if you really want it (is this something you can have all the time or is it a special/rare occasion) . I guess you will also have to consider how much you love these foods vs avoiding the progression to diabetes.

I have gestational diabetes, so I've been having to find alternatives. Enlightened ice cream seems to be a pretty good option for GD. There are some breads with lower carbs. Some of them are keto options, but I don't pay much attention to keto as the net carbs mean nothing, I need to look at total carbs. There are some carb control/low carb tortillas that I've used for a bread alternative for sandwiches. I personally love yogurt and fruit, so I switched to Two Good greek yogurt and I can still put fruit in it without going over my GD carb limit.

I quit telling myself I love food. It’s not true. If I love food what does that say about my family? I have emotional reactions to food that I like, but it’s not love. That’s an exaggeration and not helpful to living within some limits.

Have you tried Dave’s Killer Bread? There are several kinds, some thin sliced. Might be helpful.

Also, Breyer's No Sugar Added Ice Cream. I eat ice cream nearly every day. Lost 100+ lbs, maintaining for years. You might be surprised by what you can do.

Lose 10-20 lbs and start walking daily. This will go a LONG way towards keeping things under control. Obviously I know nothing about your weight and fitness, so these are the two proven diabetes strategies in general.
I lost 25 lbs, started walking and strength training and totally turned things around in 3 months. I was still severely obese, but this little change made a big difference. (I went on to loose 150 lbs.)

I was diagnosed as pre diabetic in August. I've just got my numbers back into the normal range, but I'm still trying to get them a little lower. I didn't really cut carbs so much, but I did watch sugar content on things I ate. Losing 15lbs & walking is what really help lower my numbers. My dr is having me get my A1C checked every 3 months to track my progress.

Replace with Seeded bread or low carb breads.
Brewers and halo ice cream are lower carb and calories.

I'm diabetic, I'm guessing you're not testing your blood glucose as pre diabetic or I'd say test 2 hours after eating certain things and see how it goes. Since you're probably not as far as ice cream goes there's Enlightened regular and keto line, Breyer's Delights, and Rebel (keto) ice cream. Those are all pints but Enlightened has ice cream bars too.

Bread is harder, I know many on keto make their own bread. I switched to Dave's Killer Bread "multigrain" and "seed" ones and my blood sugar still was high hours after so I rarely eat bread now. I did recently find Mission carb balance tortillas. There's a lot of low carb options now with keto.

As others have said if you need to lose weight it's going to make a difference. Working out helps a lot too. My fasting blood sugar went down with both, but the biggest quick drop was when I upped fiber quite a bit. My A1C was 4.5 in September so I'm off medication now and have been low enough that I've added more carbs back into my diet to avoid being hypoglycemic.

losing weight and exercise will more than likely get you back to normal. Have an A1C...that is more accurate reading. Mine was at 6.1 and on my 6 month check up last Oct, it was back to normal at 5.2 During that 6 months I lost 75 lbs. But even losing 20-30 would make a difference.

This is my main reason for losing weight, exercising and eating better. I need to get out of the pre-diabetic range (I may be in the diabetic range, but will find out in 2 days).

Hi! I've been seeing a dietician for the past few months and I would like to share some key points with you!
    • If possible, check your blood insulin levels. Even if your A1C and fasting sugars look good. They may look good because your body is working hard and pumping out extra insulin
    • Try to restrict carb intake to 40g per meal (2 meals, 2 snacks a day).
    • There are delicious lower-carb versions of tortillas available ("Carb Smart" and "Carb Balance" are my favorites)
    • Lower carb ice-creams are thankfully being cranked out fast enough that you can theoretically find one that really satisfies you.

    Hope this helps!
