I stepped on the scale on Sunday morning at 177.6 lbs. Then, I went out and cross-country skied 6.5 miles and came home and at a giant sodium bomb sandwich (Chicken parm because I'd just burned 1,000 calories in the freezing cold and wanted fried cheesy carbs).

I stepped on the scale Monday morning and came in at 180.4. However, thanks to the information I've received here, I didn't panic. Because, I have listened and learned and knew that I didn't somehow gain 3 lbs of fat overnight, I've just got a lot of water retention going on thanks to that workout and sandwich. Now, it is Wednesday and my scale is still at the 180ish, which is getting annoying. But, I haven't been as great about water as I should be, so I'm really doubling down and expecting it back in that ~177ish range by tomorrow or Friday.

See, sometimes people do listen! :-P

I found it takes about 3 days for me to lose excess water retention from a sodium bomb and about 4-5 days to lose it from extra exercise. Unfortunately my body seems to want to drain all that in the middle of the night so I get up several times. Why can't it happen when I am already awake????

Reading all the advice on MFP and applying common sense and your own experiences to it makes for a much more pleasant time. Thank you for your post.

Have you noticed if this happens less on days you are active? This doesn't sound like the case for you but I was reminded that my mom went to see a urinary specialist recently and mentioned she gets up to pee at night less on days she is active. The doctor explained the mechanism behind this but the details escape me.

I've been trying to have most of my water drinking before 7 pm so I can get some damn sleep. We'll see if it actually works or if my body goes "time to release that excess water" every hour between 1 and 5 am.

No. My normal routine is to get up once (for some reason it is always around 2:30 AM) and it doesn't matter much as far as activity goes. Only when I am dropping excess water weight do I get up more.
