(Nut's) is this why I'm putting on

I love my natural raw Cashew nuts & eat them most days but of late I have been struggling losing even though I am always within my daily goals. I have been putting it down to eating back most of my exercise cals but I have been logging a handful of nuts at around 60cals but I have read about having a handfull & I have been eating a handful ( I have big greedy hands).

Today I weighed out some of these nuts as per packed details & 232cals = 40g when my handful is double that so as I am logging my nut portions at 60cals I think the above might be the reason I am stuck, what do you think, are these Cashews really that high in cals.

Nuts are a "condiment" and should be treated as such. Yes, probably the reason you are stuck. Nuts are dangerous. Cheese is another "condiment."

Cashew nuts are very high in calories, and they are brilliant!

I have 20g a day of cashew nuts which is roughly 10 nuts, and it does me fine for a snack.

Cashews in themselves are a brilliant snack, full of good fats, fill you up and if you pick the non salted / roasted variety they are very balanced.

Going over your cals can't just be down to the nuts, but of course if you're measuring incorrectly and by quite a large amount, this will have an effect on your daily total.

    Hi

My suggestion is to measure or weight your portion.

Nuts are healthy but caloric. I eat Mixed Nuts and 3 tbsp are 150 calories.

    Good luck in your journey

yes, if you're logging 60 cals when you're actually taking in about 460, that sounds like your problem. cashews and almonds etc are great but if its a snack i try to stick to 10ish :)

Yep, nuts will get you! I have a major weakness for them, too. Therefore, when I buy a big bag, I go through and portion them out. It helps me bunches.

During the holiday season, it's a family tradition to have a huge bowl of nuts in shell laying around. I count every damned nut I crack and log them individually here. They add up quickly.

    But are so good....

I would think improper logging would have something to do with it...seems like a no brainer here. You're logging 60 calories of nuts but consuming far more...yeah, that's an issue.

It's not the nuts themselves...they are very good for you...but they're also calorie dense so a little goes a long way. This is why I always tell people to weight their foods...everyone thinks they're "doing it right"...and they're not. When it "doesn't work" it is largely due to things like this.

What makes nuts dangerous? There's nothing wrong with having a handful of nuts every day. Nuts are a healthy treat. Just make sure and log the calories accurately.

Nuts aren't dangerous, unless you have an allergy. Just make sure you're correctly logging what you eat. I have about 100cals worth every day and look forward to them.

Yes, you MUST weigh and measure your food accurately if you want to lose weight. "A handful" is not the same as 28 grams.

When I first started losing the initial large chunk of weight back in January 2012, the first thing I noticed was my estimated "2 Tablespoons" of coffee creamer was more like six. 2 = 70 calories; 6 = 210 calories. Things like that ADD UP FAST. So get yourself a food scale, measure out a serving - 1 oz, 28 grams, whatever - which is @155 calories and work them into your daily allotment. Either way, nuts are a very good choice for a snack, as long as you are accurate with the calories. Best of luck. :flowerforyou:

    lolno

Cheese is an entree item. 3-5 oz a day should be about right.

Just give up the nuts until you make progress.

That or log per nut half or something but it will soon add up!

Thanks for your input I am so suprised at just how few nuts I get for 60 cals, I even tried a different set of scales just to make sure. Sounds stupid but I realy did think that when anything says a handfull of nuts it ment a big hand full so I am now weighing this sort of food :(.

    Shame I love cashews.

This winter I went on a nut and nut butter "run" gained 12 lbs. I have lost most of it by completely eliminating all nut products. No self-control = no nuts. Best of luck! :)

I have found that until I measure something repeatedly I cannot eyeball it. My guesses are WAY off. I just measured what I thought would be one ounce of Feta Cheese for my salad -- it was like half an ounce. I was under estimating. BUT then I over pour my salad dressing.

The only thing I do not weigh or measure is my veggies -- I figure it really doesn't matter for those. Everything else needs to get weighed, measured, counted, or come in a prepackaged serving.

You should have seen the look on my face the first time I weighed my gelato.

Weighing everything is the best policy. The only thing I don't weigh (aside from free-pouring liquids, which I measure in mL) is raw spinach. And I did weigh it the first time just to make sure I knew what a portion looks like, even if it is only 7 calories.

You have learned a very important lesson that some people around here seem to NEVER learn

    Weigh, measure and log!

When I started a carb-cycling diet, I got a bunch of macadamia nuts to help me through my initial carb withdrawal. Eating them to satisfaction led to 1200 calories just in macadamia nuts in one afternoon (I weighed each portion before I ate them to keep myself honest).

Sadly, nuts are not part of my regular eating regimen anymore. They are a luxury I rarely afford myself, like ice cream and cookies. And I like nuts 1000 times less than those things, so I eat them almost never.

ETA: I learned that fat does not offer me the "satiety" effect it seems to offer everybody else. If my stomach is empty, it wants to be filled. It doesn't care if it takes two cups of cauliflower, fajita chicken, or pecans. It wants that volume!

Yep, cashews are delicious nuggets of high calorie goodness. Always weigh them.

You can still eat nuts, just figure them into your day in whatever serving size you can manage.

Nuts might be high in calories but evidence suggests that they do not contribute to weight gain.
