Stepping on the scale throughout the day?

Am I the only one that does this?

It never occurred to me to do that, all I'd be doing is seeing differences in digestive contents and water weight.22

that will set you up to be overly obsessive with the scale #. Weighing once a day at the same time, is all you need to watch the trend.13

Um yea no. I won’t do it. Daily weighing is work enough to keep in perspective. No chance of finding me on there after breakfast. Lol yeah. Just no.5

Lol, that's like people that watch the stock market throughout and don't trade or take out money. Just watch your BP and anxiety go up and down for no reason.

I did it once on a random day just to see what the fluctuations are and how much my weight changes during the day. General research out of curiosity, not a regular occurrence.5 -
I should add that I am a scientist / computer scientist, so... I love numbers. I log my weight daily (first thing in the morning always).4

That only seems like a good idea if you’re curious about how water and waste weight fluctuates throughout the day. It will tell you nothing about fat gain or loss, and might cause you to focus on those fluctuations instead of long term trends. I only do this if I’m looking for other information, like hydration (i.e., I might weigh before and after a long run to see how much water I lost).8

Yes! Me too... well, before and after a workout anyway

The only thing about weighing throughout the day or even once a day that even remotely makes sense to me are athletes whose weight is critical to their participation in certain sports.0

I was obsessively getting on the scale when I first started. This was back in Spring of 2019. There was the morning check in, and then 2-3 evening/night check ins. Partly it was driven by curiosity, wanting to learn how the body worked as far as when it lost weight, stored water, gave up water, how much a pound of dinner showed up as on the scale an hour later, how much pee weighed LOL, how much weight I lost overnight (usually 1.2 lbs but sometimes as much as 3.6!) etc. And part of it was, yeah, checking to see if I'd lost weight, for sure more often than is advisable.
I recall there were a lot of threads at that time about people asking about excessive scale use, and the stock answer from many was to put away the scale and get professional counseling, because it was indicative of an eating disorder, which I felt was probably gigantically overblown for most of those cases (although perhaps not all cases).
Anyways, later I learned that dieting is like any new hobby, you start off with an initial very high enthusiasm level and get into all the nitty gritty details and think about it all the time because it's the new and exciting thing in your life, but eventually it recedes into just being part of the fabric of your life, at which point a diet becomes a different kind of thing than it was at first. These days I still weigh daily since it is part of my accountability strategy, but no more than that. I'm just not in that phase of running back and forth to the scale to see if I've lost weight, anymore. I know that if I hit MFP's calorie target and my exercise metrics, the weight will fall off, no need to get it confirmed on a scale.12 -

This is the best answer

Indo it, only because I find it so interesting how much it can change throughout a day. I weigh and log every morning, and that's the only number I count. I just step on it once in a while because it's interesting to me.5

I get on it several times throughout the day sometimes, when I'm curious. To me it is not obsessive, it is mostly for amusement purposes. I don't care if I'm up several pounds in the night from the day. It's more just to see how my body fluctuates from different things. When I eat a big meal, when I have a big exercise, etc. I think it provides some interesting context to to my overall weight patterns, and helps me better understand my body. I do a proper weigh in that I track daily, but even then I don't hang up on daily ups and downs. Its just to establish a trend.7

The funny thing is... our body always has a weight. There always a “number”... like continuously. When we “weigh in”, we are just peeking for a second. That’s all. Stepping on the scale does nothing... whether it frequent or seldom so long as you have the right mindset on it.4

I avoid the scale like the plague 😂🤣😂0

The only times I weigh myself during the day is ---
I moved the scale to clean and want to make sure it is settled.
I am headed to the doctor and want to compare my scale to theirs.4 -
I absolutely never weigh myself throughout the day.
I weigh myself weekly and thats it.0 -
in the morning. b4 work out. after workout and end of day (when i think of it). i am not obsessed. i am curious. often my weight at the end of the day is less than start of day.1

Our scale is in the bathroom so I hop on it when I'm in there - but I really only officially log once a week or so. The fluctuations I see during the day/week don't mean much.1

It’s pointless.0

Stepping on the scale throughout the day?
No ... there's no point to doing that.0 -
I find it interesting to audit my numbers periodically. My favorite is getting on the scale right before bed and then getting on again in the morning *before the potty break* to see how much my weight changed with just 5-6 hours of respiration. It's usually a greater loss in the winter than in the summer, and sometimes over a pound. FROM JUST BREATHING. o_O Usually, I end up resolving to get a humidifier for my bedroom, and then forgetting about it during my first cup of coffee. ;-)

As someone who is also into numbers, it may be interesting to see how quickly eating a salty meal would do to the number on the scale...is it within the hour? longer?? But to do that everyday? Nope, I just couldn't do it because it would make me crazy1

This is me too, and yes I do! Especially at night before bed—gives me an idea what it will look like in the morning.
