Weight loss and pregnancy?

Okay, so as of April 1st I have really dedicated myself to being healthy and losing weight. (Already lost 6 lbs!) Now, my husband is talking about baby #2! I did agree (and still do) that it would be nice to have our kids 2 years apart. However, that would mean getting pregnant soon. I am a little disappointed at having to put aside what I am doing, though.
Can pregnancy and weight loss mix? I am 205 at 5'7" so feel I have 50+ pounds to lose. I actually lost 25 lbs with my first pregnancy (started at 240) because of serious morning sickness, but my doctor told me my stomach measured well, baby seemed fine, so no worries.
Anyone have an opinion? Or are there any moms who are going through weight loss while contemplating adding to their family? Obviously, none of us are doctors. Just wondering if anyone else went through this.
I was so excited about this site and my progress. I just worry if I put that on hold for a year, I won't come back to it...

I think you'd be doing yourself and your baby a favour by losing the weight first...0

My advice is..... I had lost 60 lbs prior to becoming pregnant with my third baby. I didn't think I would gain the weight back because I thought I knew better. Well for the first little while I did really well, but soon used pregnany as an excuse to eat more and to eat whatever I wanted. Now here I am stuck trying to lose some of that weight again. I also stopped any excersizes that I was doing, and I regret it. So I would definitley try for baby #2, it sounds really important to you, just work closely with your dr. You can still stick to your new healthy way of eating, and you can also workout while pregnant. I am involved in a group where a few of the moms are expecting and they are still continuing with their lifestyle, and mom's and baby's to be are good and healthy, plus labor is supposed to be easier if you are active!! Just remember not to get discouraged when you do gain weight, that is very natural during pregnancy, it's just not gaining an abundant amount of weight that you want to avoid. I say go for it!!!0

I know you commented on my post- but my Ob says if you are overweight/obese that losing weight during pregnancy is a good thing. Granted she doesn't think you should be on any crazy diets- but I know even with my first 2 pregnancies- just from knowing i was preggo I ate healthier and I ended up loosing 50lbs during the pregnancy with BOTH of them. My Ob and her nurse were sooo supportive! We always joked about because I would love to go in and get weighed! Most dr's will tell you to loose the weight first- but just keep doing what you're doing and try for that baby! GOOD LUCK!

Oh I agree with you!!!!! It's pathetic but it's one reason i like being pregnant- I can eat like a "pig" and not feel guilty about it because i just blame it on being pregnant and cravings.... ack- it's sooo wrong!0 -
Thanks for your advice bruiseviolet and peejbp! Obviously, we all recommend the advice of a doctor. However, it is so supportive to know that others have gone through what you have.
I like the advice. Keeping active and eating healthy seems the best way to go. If I lose a little weight and my doctor doesn't seem concerned, all the better! I did have a goal to be sexy and thin, but I guess that will have to wait a little longer. Besides, once I was sexy and thin, I wouldn't want to get pregnant and lose my beautiful body! :laugh:0 -
When I was working at the grocery store and found out I was pregnant, a woman came through with a newborn and we were chatting and I asked her about buying maternity clothing from her (we were the same size!) and she laughed and said she had (supervised by dr's!) lost 80 lbs during her pregnancy! She looked great!
I think it's do-able IF you're doing it right, and healthy and Dr's aren't concerned,
Good luck!0 -
I think the main point is to not starve yourself while pregnant. If you continue to eat your new "lifestyle" foods, maybe add a certain number of calories per day (if your doctor recommends) and eating good, nutritious foods, then there shouldnt' be a problem, your baby will get all the nutrients he/she needs.
I guess I Just figure that if someone who weighs 140lbs pre pregnancy can make a healthy baby by eating 1700 cal a day, then why can't someone who weighs over 200 make the healthy baby on the same cals?0 -
During pregnancy you need to consume 200 more calories than you would need normally, and if you are breastfeeding you need an extra 400 calories. It is considered healthy to gain 25-30 lbs during pregnancy. For an overweight person it CAN be healthy to MAINTAIN their weight during pregnancy rather than gaining (since you are still adding the water weight and the weight of the fetus and placenta, etc...maintaing weight is losing weight).
Under most circumstances (baring EXTREME obesity) it is not considered healthy to lose weight during pregnancy. The fetus needs specific amounts of nutrients that it cannot obtain from you if you are not taking in enough. While weight loss is importiant, ultimately the health of your baby i sthe main concern!
Breastfeeding is a GREAT way to lose weight. Eat healthy during your pregnancy (don't eat too little), and eat healthy while you breastfeed and you wil surely end up a healthier and happier momy!0 -
Thanks for all the advice! :happy:0
