Well the good news is that weight loss is all about how much you eat, and you don't need to do strenuous exercise, though exercise is good for you.

Log food, stay in calories, lose weight.

Or, you could swim, walk, dance, do yoga, canoeing, whatever activity you like for a little calorie-burn. Exercise really doesn't burn that many calories at moderate levels, so it's best to start with food.

As stated above, exercise isn't essential to weight loss, but it will help you become more healthy and more fit.

Walking is low impact and is a good way to start. Low impact aerobics that includes walking, side steps, knee lifts, kicks, etc. will burn a few more calories and strengthen your legs a bit more. Put music on and just dance. If you have access to a bike or a pool, those are good ways to get some exercise without impact.

As said, weight loss doesn't require exercise... so that's the good news!

But to your question... anything lower-impact would be a place to start. Cycling, swimming, rowing...

eat less! Calories in and calories out, you burn an amount of calories just resting, if you eat less than that amount then you'll lose weight.

If you want to exercise and have knee pain like me, I walk on the treadmill for 15 minutes at about 3.0mph and then switch over to the elliptical machine. I also like the stationary bike. This way my body doesn't get use to just doing one type of workout and my knees don't suffer. I'm not a runner and I won't do any running on the treadmill until my doctor says I can and until I've lost more weight. So far I feel great and the pounds are coming off. Just a suggestion, this works for me but everyone is different.
