good exercises to help with weight loss?
Exercise is not a good method of weight loss. A good plan that allows you to stick to a calorie goal each day is better. Add exercise to improve your fitness. You can start with walking if you are able. If you want to do something else try not to get too aggressive with any exercise until you get a handle on your eating.3 -

In all seriousness, the prerequisite for weight loss is being in a caloric deficit. Unfortunately, there aren't any shortcuts to that. Any exercise can help but it's only part of the equation. IMO too many people still try to out run/bike/lift/workout their forks.
The best advice I've gotten in the eight years I've used MFP to lose, maintain, and gain weight was this:
"manipulate your diet to change your weight, exercise for fitness and enjoyment"
Splitting that relationship between exercise and calories has been incredibly freeing to me and improved my mental relationship with exercise and food. Exercise isn't a transaction, not a punishment, and not worth x-calories; it's now a hobby that makes me stronger, healthier, and work towards achieving a certain look (more muscular). There was more than one occasion when I'd planned for Chipotle for dinner but didn't have the calories left for guac; I elected to run there and back to "earn" my guac. When I really thought about it I fealt that wasn't a healthy mindset to have and my attitude had to change.
Important to note that I used "diet" there as a noun, not a verb. Follow any way-of-eating you like, get your minimum dietary protein and fat, stay negative on calories and you'll be good to go.9 -
Weight loss occurs in the kitchen rather than in the gym. As far as the best exercise for fitness, the one you enjoy and will stick with is the best by far. Doing weights though will help you preserve muscle mass while losing weight which is beneficial.3

Any exercise that you enjoy is beneficial. Try new things. As @steveko89 said, it's a much healthier mindset to think of exercise as another component of a healthy body. If you use it to punish yourself for eating above your calories, you're going to suck the joy right out of it. And no matter what, you simply cannot out-exercise the fork. I read it in blogs all the time here: people who spend an extra hour on the cardio machine because they ate XYZ. To some extent, you can mitigate a calorie laden day, but it's not a long term plan. (And by the way, you didn't "earn" 1000 calories on that elliptical machine...)0
