"I don't want any more. Do you want it?" "I didn't like it anyway"

Oh, my! We were extremely poor and chickens were scarce. The whole country was poor at that time. So when Mom had money to buy chicken, it was a holiday and, of course, kids got some best pieces, but adults somehow either ate already and/or didn't like the chicken. So, that's the memory of my beloved parents. This is the ultimate sacrifice. And about the liver. We had to eat it because it was healthy - it has a lot of iron and it's much better than iron from the bottle.0

My family didn't have much money and though we split the food as evenly as we could, I was often either still hungry after I'd finished my portion, or my dad/sister/mom would be eating their snack and I'd be hungry earlier than expected. So that I didn't feel guilty about eating more when I'd already had something to eat, they'd say they didn't really like it that much or that they were full and give me some. I mean, otherwise I'd be worried they didn't have enough.
This is a very kind thing to do, so I don't understand why everyone is hating on the OP's family? It's no wonder they bailed the thread after the shitstorm rained down on them.
I'm not seeing a "shitstorm" or "hating." What I saw was that adults in OP's life gave OP food because OP, as a child, acted passive aggressively about it (i.e., "I was eyeballing that food like I was starving. Or I said something like...I like pie/sandwich/cake too I wish I had some."). They did this even though the adults wanted the food.
I didn't get any sense that there was a lack of food in OP's family; if that was the case, I'd read the situation differently. Instead, it struck me as adults giving in to this behavior and making excuses for it. I saw it as adults not teaching the child to ask for what they want, not telling the child no, and giving the child the impression of being entitled to whatever other people were eating. And, I saw OP being resigned to doing the same with their child "because that's just what we do."11 -
I don't really recall anything like this growing up. We had meal times and we ate meals. If we had pie or cake, it wasn't just a piece and everyone was having desert. The only thing I remember food wise was that my dad was a picky eater and often didn't like whatever my mom had prepared for dinner so he would eat a peanut butter sandwich and it would royally piss her off.
We were pretty broke, so it was a lot of tuna and noodle casseroles, pork and beans on white bread, etc.4
