5k training question

I signed up for my first 5k the other day, and realized that it is this coming Sunday! I just ran my first 5k on Friday night and decided if I can do that, I can do a race!

My question is: with just 6 days til race day, how should I prepare? My usual routine is: lifting and minor cardio m/w/f and cardio t/th, then either a walk or a run on the weekends.

I've only been running seriously for 3 weeks or so.

I would say that if you did your 5k on Friday by following that routine then you should be fine to continue on with your schedule this week. Maybe have a little more carbs the night before and morning of but otherwise if you have been feeling fine then go for it! Basically if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

    Have fun!

Agreed. Just want to add, make Saturday a rest day, and don't do anything out of the ordinary between now and then. Don't try to add mileage or speed this week. Cheers!

Thanks! Should I do another long run (3 m+) between now and then? 2.25 m is my longest cardio run so far, besides my 5k on Friday...

That's your call, I would probably do 2.25-2.5 miles if I were you.

Perfect! I'll make that my plan for Thursday! Thank you for your input!

Also, if you do heavy lifting, I'd avoid having too strenuous of a leg day during the week leading to your race. Definitely no setting PRs on squats or deadlifts!

Do exactly what you did the week before you ran that Friday training 5k. You're not going to do anything this last week to make your official 5k any faster/better. All you can do is hurt it. So do what worked for you already.

Thanks everyone! I did 2.5 miles on the indoor track today, at a pretty good time (for me, 26:38), and felt like I could have completed the rest of a 5k pretty easily, so I think I've got this!

I'll just follow my routine for the week and take Saturday off. It's crazy to me: 2 months ago, I struggled to run a quarter mile...now I'm taking mid distance runs like they ain't no thang! Haha

Update: I DID IT! I ended up having to take my 15 month old daughter (so, pushing the jogging stroller), so that slowed me down a little. I didn't walk at all, even up the hills! My original goal was sub 40, and I came in at 40:15.5. I wasn't last! And I won a cool gym bag from my gym!

    Great work lady! Congrats!
