Pilates question

I've been doing Pilates for over a year now and LOVE it. One thing I really don't love, though, is bridging and no matter what level class I'm in we do it. It really hurts my back, even when I load up the springs. I haven't said anything to the instructors out of sheer embarrassment- I don't want to be the only one in the class sitting it out. I think I'm doing it correctly, but for some reason it does not feel good and often my lower back will ache after class. I'm in my mid 50's so is it that my spine is just old- haha?
