Buckwheat is genearlly ferred to as a cereal grain, but it's actually the seed of a broadleaved herbaceous plant, while true grains like corn and wheat are all in the grass family. You can find buckwheat as groats or flour or in pancake mixes at your local food co-op or health food store or at your local market in baked goods and other grain products. Buy it by the bag or in bulk and use it in your baking recipes as a healhty way to improve your fertility. Buckwheat is packed with B vitamins, which are thought to support fertility and can help boost your energy levels.

* Riboflavin is needed to make riboflavin carrier protein. This protein mediates the supply of vitamins to a developing fetus. in other wrds, without sufficient amounts of vitamins, which could lead to infertility.

* Niacin can help dilate blood vessels, which can improve a man's ability to reach erection, leading to more successful intercourse. This may also help make intercourse a more pleasurable experience, which is important, particularly if you are feeling pressure about conceiving.

* All the B vitamins play a role in your body's ability to get energy from your food. Buckwheat is a great source of B vitamins. If you've ever eaten buckwheat, it's probably been in buckwheat pancakes. You may have also sampled the dark, boldly flavored, and prized buckwheat honey. You can find buckweat pancake and waffle mixes, buckwheat flour, buckwheat cereals, and even buckwheat pasta in health food stores, your local food co-op, online,a nd even in whole-foods and some mainstream supermarkets. Mixing a little buckwheat flour into your multigrain bread will definitely up the flavor, fiber, and nutrient content.

But bread, cereal, pancakes, and the like aren't my favorite way to enjoy buckwheat. I enjoy the toasted grains in kasha. Make kasha by rinsing buckwheat groats (seeds) with a beaten egg and toasting in a heavy skillet, add water (1 1/2 cups of buckwheat groats), bring to a boil, and then reduce the heat and allow the buckwheat to absorb the water over very low heat. (You can also buy "instant" precooked kasha.) Kasha makes a perfect stuffing for baked winter squash, especially if you stir in onion, garlic, and herbs like winter savory or rosemary, all sauteed in olive oil. It also makes a great side dish if you mix in steamed sliced carrots and/or shredded red cabbage.
