I am having my 9th ankle surgery soon and even though I’ll be nwb for 12 weeks I fear gaining while being so sedentary. Mindless snacking from boredom is my downfall. I know what to buy and not to buy but I could still use some friends to keep my motivation up! Thanks for reading

I would eat at Maintenance calories during the healing. Your body needs all the nutrition it can get to mend.

You are going to have quite a lot of inflammation and that will show up as additional (water) weight on the scale. I would also stay off the scale for that 12 weeks, but then I know precisely how many calories to eat since I've been logging food for over a decade.

Have you thought about maybe taking on a volunteer position answering phones or inputting data or some kind of non-active work while you're in recovery? (If you can't go to work.) I would have to stay busy if I was unable to get around.

May you heal quickly. Welcome to the site.

You need to eat less calories than your body burns to lose weight. Calorie deficit is all you need. Exercise isn’t necessary for weight loss. Exercise is great for being healthy.
There are a lot of seated exercises you can do. Check out YouTube.

Another vote for eating maintenance calories, or at least close, while recovering. I know that's frustrating, but recovery really is job #1. Poor or slowed recovery comes back to bite in the the long run.

As far as activity, ask your doctors what it's OK for you to do, how much, and when. You may eventually be able to upper-body lifts or band exercises or something like that.

You should be able to avoid gain by keeping careful tabs on your eating. I agree with riverside that a distraction would be good. This might be a good time to revive an old hobby, or adopt a new one. (Especially good for avoiding snacking temptations are things that require clean hands (needlework, playing a musical instrument, sketching, etc.) or create dirty hands (painting).

    Best wishes for speedy healing!
