Hello everyone! I'll get straight to the point with this one because I am a little lost on what I can do to substitute my carbs. My issue is that I can't eat rice or potatoes or bread or anything starchy like these items. Why you may ask is because for some reason when I eat these particular foods or anything close to them with being starchy I get horrible back pain. I don't know what is going on nor can I get a straight answer from my doctor because they don't know either. I have switched it from white rice to brown rice to jasmine rice but I still get the shooting pain. The same goes for potatoes from white to red to sweet potatoes. I have decided to cut all these out but I am lost on what to fill my carbs with. My current macros are 160g P / 120g C / 55g F. The only thing I can think of is having a banana or two each day but would like some other options if anyone has any ideas. Thank you in advance!

Have you been tested for celiacs, and IBS, or had your gallbladder looked at?

I have been tested for everything possible. Only one in my family to have this sort of problem.

I'm assuming that beans are starchy enough to provoke this reaction too?

You can get carbohydrates from fruit and non-starchy vegetables. Foods like broccoli, cauliflower, greens, carrots . . . all these have carbohydrates.

The other thing to consider is that you don't *need* to hit that carbohydrate goal for any particular reason. The only essentials are protein and fat. The issue is that carbohydrate-containing foods do contain a lot of things we need, like vitamins and fiber. If your diet limitations are a problem, consider asking your doctor if you can get a referral to an RD. They would be able to help you design a diet that avoids the foods that cause you pain while ensuring you're getting everything that you need.

Sadly yes beans also do it but not as quickly. Kidney beans are my favorite but after a little bit, the pain rolls in. Getting ready to go to the grocery store now to get these. I love all sorts of vegetables so that will be easy for me

Are you saying that if you eat a cup of white rice you will have rather immediate shooting pain that feels like it is in your back? As a non-expert, I'd suspect your pancreas.

I can have a few bites of rice and not feel anything but a few more bites of rice and I get shooting pain in my back. It is a very weird feeling. It almost feels like my back is getting crushed. Within that moment it is a little hard to breathe since it feels like my back is getting crushed. Potatoes are the worse for me honestly. A fourth of a potato is enough to make it start acting up. It sucks because I love these foods but honestly it isn't worth it.

Do carrots, beetroots and parsnips have the same reaction? They’re lower in starch but still nicely filling, and roast carrots are lovely in place of potatoes. Also, is it all bread? Can you eat sourdough or rye bread? (They don’t have as much yeast but are maybe still too starchy.) butternut squash is another filling veg which might not be as much of an irritant.

I hope you're pushing for more tests? A referral to someone else? Sounds like you need to find some answers. :(
Sorry, no advice but hope you figure it out soon!!

It is interesting that beans affect you more slowly because they would have a lower GI than potatoes and rice.

I haven't really tried any other types of bread other than white and wheat. I felt like there wasn't a point in figuring out with the bread since I don't eat it that much anyway. Carrots do not affect me what so ever and I haven't tried beetroots or parsnips before so I don't know how I would react to them. I am going to be experimenting more with my vegetables.

I am pushing for more tests soon. Moving to a new state in the following week to come. Will start there. I hope I get it figured out soon to see if I can take something to ease it or if I have to not eat these types of foods anymore.

I know! I don't understand it sometimes. Potatoes are the worse while rice and bread are about the same but I don't eat much bread anyway so I am not too worried about that. I have looked into the lower-carb version of potatoes to see if it's a possibility that too many carbs in the food is the problem. Like I have somehow developed a carb intolerant of some sort. It honestly is really weird. It has been happening for years. I noticed it when I was 14 and eating McDonald's french fries and it has always happened ever since. I had quit eating their fries thinking it was the grease but got the same pain when I had their chicken sandwiches and quit eating fast food in general. The thing I don't get is the small quantity of rice or potatoes I get the pain but I can eat 2 slices of a large pizza and not get any pain.
